High Pitched Front Wheel Noise

Group,

I am getting a high pitched front wheel noise when driving around in my 99 SE. I have not had a chance to take the wheel off and examine but the noise goes away when i hit the brakes. I had the wheel bearing done on that wheel a year or so ago so i don't think its bearing related, I am leaning toward needing new brake pads, anyone have opinions?

Thanks in advance!

change your brake pads, there is a metal clip that scrapes against the rotors when your pads are low so you'll know to change them

I have a 6th Gen and have the same exact problem right now, I saw this post, It's not the same gen...but I have a high pitched noise only at 70-110km/hr anything higher or lower the noise isn't there. Turning the wheel doesn't change the sound whatsoever.

well it turns out my brake pads are ok, but I do have torn CV boots on both sides, grease everywhere. Could they be the source of my high pitched squeal?

Noise

Ive had the same problem for a few months now.
High pitched whine type sound comming from my passenger side wheel area.
I only hear the noise at about 30+ mph. It does get louder at Highway speeds, and sounds just like a wheel bearing...

But NONE of my bearings feel loose at all and over the last few months the noise has not gotten any worse and I still have no play in the wheels.

A week ago my super mega expert mechanic friend. (Brake Masters employee);P put it on the lift and poked around with a stethoscope and said that the noise was originating from the transmission where axle enters.

Any super mega expert .org'ers got any ideas?

not the alternator bearings by chance is it?
because the alternator does sit behind that passenger side wheel

alt. wouldn't make this happen...

and the post that namegoeshere said if your running at 60 and let off the gas when the rpms goes back down if you can still hear it it would be the wheel, try going 40 putting your car in neutral and see if it goes awy, if it does then maybe the alt.

Naw, the noise is there when in neutral and when in gear. It seems that the sound is not affected by rpm as much as it is by speed. 0 - 25ish = normal
30+ and it goes from audible to annoying.

Sorry OP not trying to Thread-Jack.
Hoping we can kill two birds with one thread.

Thanks guys/girls

when is the last time you have been to the carwash bro??? b/c if you get alot of dirt on your rotors they squeal until the dirt is finally rubbed off, however if you have grease on the backsides of your rotors it could cause a squeal (grease attracts dirt very badly and grease is not the easiest to get off!) try washing the backsides of your rotors, if that don't work, get a floor jack and some jack stands or if you know someone with a lift(would be better), jack the front wheels off the ground start the car put it in drive or 1st(manu) go untill you hear the squeel when you hear it get out and while your wheel is spinning look around for where it could come from...

You bed your rotors not your pads. It is the repetitive heat cycle and uninterrupted cooing of the metal that gives your rotor more surface area and better resistance to warping. It is a must for anyone that races. Finding a good place to do it right is the trick... and it's never to late to do it.
