just got quoted $1000 in repairs...any input appreciated

I just go quoted $600 for labor and $400 for parts.

My rack&pinion is leaking,

a hose to the power steering pump is leaking/damaged

My mechanic says the subframe for my suspension is damaged and needs to be replaced.

What do you guys think of his price quote?
Would I be better off buying the parts on my own? If so where would be the cheapest place to purchase the parts from?

Thankyou,
Any input is greatly appreciated

Ray

<--- coming from a mechanic, can't say without seeing the car. Geussing if you do need a new subframe (He probably meant control arm bushings?) & steering rack that could easily = $1000.

well, since you plan on changing the power steering equipmet anyhow here is a suggestion. If your sterring system is leaking, go buy some of hte Lucas PS system treatment. The stuff is thick as tar but will seal up the leak. If you system is leaking and stiff, run the Lucas for about 2 weeks. Once sealed, do a PS system flush and when you put the new ATF in, add 3/4 can of the Seafoam TransTune. (Any other seafoam sucks, but this will definately free up your PS) The Lucas is about $9, Seafoam about $7 and 2 bottls of ATF is about $4-5 (you dont need synthetic etc). You can do the work easily with a friend. If you dont know how to do a PS flush let me know and I can give you instructions.

My Powersteering is leaking but its very minor the powersteering fluid in the reservoir never goes down very much, so you could just spray some engine degreaser on the lines to remove the old stuff and see if it leaks bad enough for you to replace/fix it up.
