Whats the deal with car-part trannys

So im looking for a tranny and i want to know why there is so many 95-99 5spd trans on there that claim to have locking diff. Anyone who knows anything knows that the 95-99 US maximas did not have locking diff as an option, yet the yards i called swear up and down that they are locking. Im really getting sick of this miscommunication and shadyness its pretty old. Most of these junkyard guys lack the capacity to speak proper english (no offense) and honestly i really wonder what transmission they actually have on hand with this conflicting info. Im not about to order a "98 locking" tranny for just under $1000 if its just a regular POS 98 trans that i could have got for $500. Also the people that claimed theres was locking refused to give me a VIN for the car it was taken from or they didnt have it. Why do these people not even know what they have in stock!? i mean come ON!

If you wonder where the hate comes from i drove about 6 hours today to pick a trans up that didnt even exsist even though the guy over the phone said he set it aside it ended up being f*ckin AUTO!@! This industry really sucks to buy a used trans unless its local, only thing local is a 6spd that i dont want to take the time to make work... rant done

Search for an i30 5spd. IIRC, all of the i30 5spds were VLSD. If not search for a 5th gen one. And I can understand your frustration w/ communicating with junkyards. They are always either too lazy or just dont care to check parts.

Good luck nonetheless.

i dont think you understand i called EVERY 5th gen 5spd maxima one on there, 95-99 maxima aswell as I30 locking and non and everyone is retarted! No straight answers except for one which reqiures a fax machine to order which i dont have. Maybe ill go down to my local fedex kinkos and see if i can just use one there to order one once and for all.

FYI vsld was an option for the base I30 from 96-99 standard on Touring models only

Most 5spd I30s were Touring models tho...and if they are nice enough to give you the VIN number, you can decode it to find out if it was a base or Touring.

Doesnt carpart search for similar cars with same parts automatically? Which would mean that when you search for maxima parts, it gives you I30 parts as well, which, in turn, explains why youre finding so many LSD cars. Just a guess...

It does to a point but it doesnt mix i30 and maximas together plus it always shows the year and model. It discludes all 95 model years in a 96-99 search. It also seperates 95, 96-99, 00,01 if you search specifically for a locking or non its really stupid but trust me i sat on the computer for hours yesterday and today making the phone calls to all of them to get the low down scoop and i got a bad vibe from almost all of them. So i kinda figured maybe i was being paronoid with the vibe thing so i midaswell make the drive and finally get a good low milage trans... of course it was auto and i almost ripped the guys head off! All that time and gas money down the drain when it could have gone to shipping one here instead.

ugh what pisses me off the most is there is a junkyard that i can visually see behind my house a couple blocks down that has a mint 49K 6spd hlsd tranny for $700 i can walk a damn wagon down there and pick it up or throw it in my camrys trunk for crying out loud but then i need to source all the other parts to swap and i really dont feel like finding them all or buying them new. Ive done a swap like that before but only because it was convienant to me getting everything as a package deal with the trans... Im so mad today after all this you guys dont understand.

I ALSO drove 45 min one way at 5am to get brand new axle seals for this supposed tranny so i could install it tomorrow but now obviously thats not happening.

I feel your pain. I've been yard hunting ever since I got my maxima for coilpacks. I either get the "can't sell them if the engine works," "don't have any maximas," or "yeah, got a pair of 99's. no, they don't have those bad coilpacks." the yard that said it didn't have any maximas is like 2 miles from my house and I drive by it daily and there is at least two 4th gen max's right by the front fence line where you can see them by the road.

lol so you know what i mean. I think ive figured them out. If your not a business they dont want your business because its too much paperwork to sell to your average consumer.

That goes without saying.
I have been dealing with wrecking yards for years up here in Canada and most of them are no differrent.

I will be putting my 98 VLSD tranny up for sale shortly but shipping cross border to WI would be brutal.

To be honest, you will not find a huge difference with a VLSD over an open diff on dry pavement. The viscous coupling can only transmit a significant amount of torque if there is a large speed difference between the two wheels. It is meant more for increased traction on snow covered roads. Why else would Nissan have made it standard on all Canadian maximas?

If I was you, I would go for the 6MT HSLD. The geared differential is much quicker to respond to wheel speed/torque differences. I was sourcing parts for months when I did my swap.

Its actually not a pick and pull type yard but the guys there are awesome. The car that it came from was stripped of parts and crushed and this was over a year ago according to there story all the main parts like the shifter assembally, cables ect were already boughten by various repair shops. Only things left are the motor and tranny. Infact in talking with them they offered me a 29K motor (3.5 obviously) and the 6spd as a "combo" for a discount all for $1200. Im very tempted to just do that but still i dont want my car down for a long time and sense i have no leads on any parts except for the shifter assembally and trim from the NYC guy in the classifieds it would be taking a big risk finding the rest within the next month or so.

Not to bump and old thread or anything but I am also in this predicament. How did everything go? Did you find the parts?

There are a couple of yards I have called on a couple of occasions here in Atlanta area for engines, and they always have 90,000 miles. I am sure they all really have 90,000... right.

Oh yea Ive gone to a local yard for a 5spd with my cousin. They ended up trying to hand us a torque converter and auto. DUBS. We were like we dont want that! Huge waste of time for my cousin.

Thankfully the VLSD I got from a different yard has been good.

Screw that. I will put a little money down but thats it. I know I could have a bank over turn it but it just seemed more sketchy then it should of.
