How water tight is your 4th gen Maxima? Does your trunk leak?
#41
I had a bit of water collecting in my '95s trunk too, kept draining it through the plugs. I had assumed it was just a bad seal until I had it the body shop for a fix on the bumper.
They found that water was coming in around the spoiler holes, it was rusted way more than I ever imagined. I had assumed it was just a little rust bubbling up, but in reality it was rotting out pretty bad. They sanded/fixed up the spots and put a couple pieces of hard plastic between the spoiler and trunk deck, no leaks now. It looks a little wierd on close examination but is a fine fix until I find a replacement.
So if you have a spoiler check it out. I would be shame to let the rust spread on the trunk lid or start forming in the trunk from sitting water.

Hi everyone,
I think I might have some water leaking issues on my 1996 Maxima. I know for a FACT that my car was never in an accident, so I am sure that it not adding to the issue. However it seems that when I get into my Max it often seems humid inside, and many times the windshield will fog up quickly. I THINK my trunk might be letting some water in. If so how can I fix that? Is it usually the gasket that goes bad? Are there any other common ares for 4th gen's to leak? What have you done to fix any and all water leaks?
Thanks,
Zack

Like some have said the water in the trunk can be drained by removing a gasket under the spare. I had water collecting in my trunk after heavy rains. I tracked it down to a poor seal between the rubber strip that sits on a metal edge all the way around the trunk. So, I used black silicone sealant around the entire perimeter, between the rubber strip and the metal edge. I've been leak free since.

In the winter I have suspected my sun roof drains too, as it smells funny after a lot of rain, and I've left it outside. I need to check those before the monsoon comes next month. With the windows fogging, did you check for a bad heater core, is it smelling like antifreeze at all ?

I have a 95 se with 145k and have no leaks (thank god!)
do you use your a/c?
the reason I ask is maybe the evap drain is clogged and you are getting water in the cabin that way. check the carpet under the passanger side dash for moisture.to get rid of the smell I suggest a good dose of Fabreeze every couple of days for a while.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I have a wet passenger carpet and believe the evap drain is my issue. How do I locate this hose to see if that's the issue. Please help! Suggestions to clear it out?
Thanks! Tom

EDIT:
If you stick your head deep in back of the glove box you can see the drain tube with a flashlight.

i have this same issue to, except my car got in slammed the rear by a mechanic that had started drinking early after comming off of work at 5...x_x
areas to check:
- all 4 tail light housings (make sure they are watertight, if not use some black sealent or RTV
-trunk lock key area (check and see if its fixed or if it turns)
- antenna mount (pull back the pannel and see if any condensation is commin' thru it)
- spare tirewell (idk if nissan did this or my car is just diff, but on some tirewells theres pop out dranage plugs, check and see if they are there)
and if your car does have a sunroof, check and see if the rubber seal is still intact.
hope this helps

I tried this and redid mine withsilicone and the leak still exists. I just removed the plugs under the spare until I get more time to track this problem down.

i had a leak in my trunk, but the main culprit was the rubber strip across the top of the trunk line, it wasn't sitting right. but lo and behold i went for a car wash and had a wet spot towards the right side of the trunk(passenger side) will look deeper into it

Me and my two brothers 4th gens all have no leaks in the trunk area, but my roomate's 4th gen on the other hand, when he bought it, his trunk was full of water, still cant find where its coming from.
