msd rpm switch problem

msd rpm switch problem
i have the msd switch PN# 8969 wired correctly.
i have the white wire tapped into the white w/ green stripe wire, pin #5 on the ecu. i basically just cut the tach wire, connected another piece of wire from 1 end to the other, then spliced the msd wire onto it. i soldered, heat shrinked all my connections.
weird thing is during cruising, it'll show the rpm display for about 5 minutes, then it just goes to 0 and stays like that. i don't have it connected to the VIAS since i don't have the 00vi kit yet.
would connecting the white wire to the rpm signal behind the cluster make any difference? anyone ever experience this problem? i bought this brand new off of ebay.

spoke w/ a guy at MSD and one guy said i need to connect my power source and ground wire to a good non-accessory source. i have it wired to my cig lighter and it works fine, what difference would it make

It'll slowly drain the battery if you leave the car in ACC, and I guess they want it on a straight ignition source so it doesn't lose power when you crank the car. Just a guess, though.

o i see. well its not like i ever just leave it on ACC anyways. i think i'm just going to keep the power source connections as is.

ok, i just hooked it up to the TAM screw and annoyingly once again, after 5 minutes of start up, the display goes back to zero. WTF!? i don't understand why its doing this.
and my last resort it to send it back to MSD cause they said it'll take up to 14 days for the process to be complete. i'm beginning to think this is messed up or something...
pmohr, what non-accessory +12 v source do you recommend of using?

i guess i have to send it in cause i really don't think the power connections are the issue here......sigh

If you are sure the wire lead from the 8969 to the tach output on the MSD box is good and is not shorting to ground then the input circuit of the 8969 may be bad.
