What oil filter do you use in your 4th gen Maxima?

Hi everyone,
I usually use either a OEM Nissan filter or a WIX oil filter on my 1996, depending on which auto parts place I am closer to. However Nissan uses a filter that was made in China, a 900E or 9E, I forget. How many use that filter? What about the WIX? What filter do you like using the best?

Those may be fake. OEM Nissan is made in Japan.

I use mobil 1. OEM and Wix are both good too tho. If you ever hold a Fram in one hand and a good filter in the other, you can feel a good sized weight difference.

Mobil1 M110 or OEM. I really really do not recommend Fram filters of any sort, at least not the cheapest ones. Fram in general makes a really poor product. On another forum I remember someone got a bunch of filters (might have been back in my Taurus days) and they cut open tons of filters, and the fram filter was really the weakest filter of all of them. Apparently the flow rate through frams is horrible, not to mention the fact that they clog up faster, thus your oil goes through the bypass valve and doesn't get filtered at all.

I am not a fan of Fram at all.

Nope not fake, NIssan BOx from Nissan dealer. The 9000E(I think it is actually 15208-9000E) is the filter that NIssan uses on many of their cars and trucks now. When my 1996 was new I think another part number was used, however they all cross over to the 9000E now. It clearly states made in China. Now for my 1995 Pathfinder and 1995 SE-V6 pick up, they use a 15208-55Y00, which is made in Japan. The made in Japan filter is blue, while the 15208-9000E is gray.

check out this sticky on oil and filters...

http://forums.maxima.org/fluids-lubr...viscosity.html

so according to that sticky, for the engine you're running, you should use the OEM filter with part number 15208-9e000. i just changed my oil with castrol gtx and used a bottle of auto-rx for the first time as well as using this exact oil filter. engine sounds muccchh better now, can barely hear it. i got the filter off a site online, about $6 a pop. dont forget the little washer thing.

You know, it might have actually been. I know after reading that I stopped using fram filters in the Taurus and got motorcraft ones, and after 3000 miles my oil wasn't nearly as black with the motorcraft as with fram. I think most of it was running bypass when I had the fram in.

On my Maxima I pretty much exclusively use the Mobil 1 M1-110. I hear that is the best one out there for our cars at the moment, and I definitely am not going to skimp on that considering the oil filters on these cars are so ridiculously small it is unbelievable.

I have used one and only one oil filter on my car since I got it and that would be Mobil 1 oil filter M1-110.

WOW 20w50 in a max, why? That is a very heavy weight oil, the temp must always be very hot where you live. Nissan states that we should use 5w30 in our cars.

heavier oil is for colder temperatures, not hotter.

That's a typo, right?

A 20/50 flows like a 20 weight when cold (at start up) and like a 50 weight when hot (at operating tempurature).

Conversely a 5/30 flows like a 5 weight when cold and like a 30 weight when hot.

I hope I haven't insulted anyone's intelligence with those tidbits as they are pretty much the fundamentals of multi-vis motor oil.

For the coldest of cold climates, a 0W/30 is likely the best choice... flows like milk when cold and like safflower oil when hot.

I would agree with Casey... A 20/50 seems very heavy for the tolerances in the VQ, regardless of the climate.

I'd bet money that Omoran's mileage sucks (relatively speaking) and his start ups are noisey.

Oil change every 2000 miles sounds a bit extreme, you must have a lot of $$. I do mine every 5000 miles using whichever least expensive 5W30 oil on sale and Frame filter. 237,000 miles and is still going on a 97SE.

I use Mobil 1 5W/30 synthetic with Mobil 1 M1-110 filter and every time I take the oil out after 5000 to 7000 miles oil is still golden brown it makes me wonder if I should leave it in longer

do you mean 20W50 oil? Isn't that a bit heavy for this engine?

That has, without a doubt, got to be the single best reason for choosing a particular filter I've heard.

For the best info on fluids, go to bobistheoilguy.com

New nissan filters are made in china and are ALMOST the same as the JAPAN ones inside, I still prefer the Japan ones. Other than OEM, wix, mobil and others are good as well.
