Starting issues can't figure out

Ok, ive been off here for a long while but I'am having a weird problem with my 96. It does this off and on but a lot more frequent here lately. You turn the key and there is a audible "click". turn it back off and most of the time it cranks right up the next turn. First thought battery cables right? Replaced those all new.... same problem.

Sometimes it just does nothing at all, no sound and u have to turn the key anywhere from 3-10times before it starts. The starter motor turns over fast and don't drag or anything so I don't believe thats the culprit. Iam thinking bad relay or solenoid.. Only problem is i cannot find a starter relay ANYWHERE online. Any other suggestions or has someone else cured this problem?? Thanks!

Ah yes that I did forget to mention.. I was considering that also. I just figured I would start simple (battery posts) and go from there. I figured the relay would be the next simple step but i cannot find one anywhere. Can you just use a "generic" relay for the starter??

Just going by your symptoms, sounds like the switch to me. Try searching "ignition switch". Seems like a lot of guys have had that problem.

Try wiggling it and pushing it up and down when it shows the symptoms.

Yeah, ill try it. But.... I think since im getting the "click" sound from under the hood it's getting power from the igniton switch i dunno.. Thanks for the responces.

sounds like either a weak battery or a starter issue if you are getting a click.
Nevermind, just reread the OP. More likely the switch or a bad ground. I hate tracking down electrical problems.

Must be a more common problem than first expected.

the click you are refering to is the relays ,right ? im having same problem . no cranking , new strt switch, new inhibit relay , good starter because if go straight to selonoid wire to battery , starter engages everytime . are there any other relays or fuse links or fuses i am overlooking?

Have you jumped across the inhibitor relay to see if it'll crank then?

The starting circuit is extremely simple, there's not much to go wrong.
