Exhaust falling apart

So yesterday afterwork I walk out to my car and I see something hanging down form my car. I look under the car to get a closer look and I see what looks like a heat shield just in front of the muffler. It was rusted so bad that is has fallen. I yanked on it and it came off along with a couple of clamps. Is this really a heat shield and do I really need it for any reason? There was some packing material that looked like it separated the heat sheild from the exhaust pipe. This is the 12 yo OEM exhaust.

Take some pics. If your car is noticeably louder then I would fix it. If it isn't then honestly I wouldn't worry about it. When I had my car on the lift one of the mechanics took some parts off the exhaust that weren't needed since it would of eventually fell off. I think what you mean. Get some pics.

Heh, mine is doing the same thing, the heat shields seem to deteriorate much faster than the actual exhaust. I'm assuming because it catches the brunt of the water splashes when it rains.

The sound didn't change any. I call ed dealer and asked them. They told me it was a heat shield to keep heat off the floor pan. So I'm not going to worry about it. My car just got 2lbs lighter though.

I just had a muffler shop putting on a new resonator, and the guy suggested to me that I leave it off (the heat shield) because it catch/soaks up the water and holds it on the pipe, rusting it out faster.

He said that heat shields BEFORE the resonator are nessesary, due to the heat from the exhuast, but AFTER they don't do much due to the speed of heat loss through the pipe/air flow under car.

Long story short - jerk it off, you'll be fine.

Yeah I just pulled it off. Now I just need to take it to a muffler shop to install the new muffler I got. The old bolts are rusted on so bad I can't get them off.
