Ignition coils...shuddering at stop when in Drive, etc
Hey all,
I have the problem I've seen a lot on the forums...at stops, the car shudders randomly every few seconds when in Drive/Reverse but not in Park or Neutral. It only occurs once the engine has warmed up, not when it's cold. Also has some hesitation and studdering at certain rpm points. At first I tried changing fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, cleaning throttle body/IACV, etc. Then I came to these great forums and saw that it was most likely the ignition coils.
My problem is that I have replaced 3 ignition coils and it hasn't helped. They are 2 rear and 1 front, and I have tried moving them in every combination to fix it. I don't want to spend another >$200 to replace all 6, but is it likely that they are all bad, or that it is something else?
The car's bone stock, everything else is working fine.
Thanks!

What year? Any codes?
FWIW if all of your coils are bad, then only a whole set will fix the problem. No need to spend $200, you can get them much cheaper used.
Have you tested them? The procedure for that is found through search.

1996, no codes...well, I don't have check engine light, but I do get 0325 with my ScanGauge.
I did just notice from a search on the forums the magic of eBay Motors with ~$25 coils....can't believe I paid full price for 3 of them already!!!
I did the resistance testing and got the same result for all of them.

in all of my testing i have yet to find a valid test for "intermittent" (sp?) failing spark plugs with a multimeter. FWIW Certain shops have better equipment that will test the spark plug better. I took my car there and they actually told me which two coils are failing. Replaced them and now i'm problem free for 3 months.
i replaced 4 ignition coils recently and the other 2 are original......and the car is riding sluggish on acceleration.....can it be possible that the other 2 are done and will not pop up a check engine light?
Air assembly question
Hey, I just noticed something else odd. I have a vacuum hose that attaches to nothing...See where my finger is pointing?

I checked courtesy nissan's parts site, and it says I need some sort of resonator, but there is no hole in my air duct assembly to plug into...I'm talking about 16580R at http://www.courtesyparts.com/maxima-...1800_1803.html
Is this random hose connecting to nothing normal?

Did you not follow the line down to where it starts from? Is it not the trans breather?
You can see your scoop was designed for that secondary (well, tertiary, really) resonator, you must have a later model resonator (primary) in there.
Actually, FAST shows that resonator only being there in 02/94-07/95.

It doesn't matter, it's essentially just for sound.
Awesome.
Well, after reading several other threads with people having similar stumbling @ stops in drive and during some accelerating, I'm going to clean the engine grounding screws on the intake, the MAF sensor, and check the crank sensor. If that doesn't work, I'll buy the new KS and coils. Will let everyone know how it goes.

Of course, the easy things are not the solution. I cleaned the MAF (looked fine beforehand), and the screws (also looked good as new). I'll buy the new KS and 3 new coils. My symptoms definitely get worse when it gets hot though.
If your coils need replacement PLEASE don't buy them from ebay seller AIRflowtech or you are in for a world of hurt.

Sorry for spamming this but I don't want anyone here getting screwed like I did.

Hey all,
I just replaced the 4 coils I hadn't already, and the knock sensor. Good news: car feels better, but I don't want to jinx it before I go for a long ride on a hot day. The knock sensor P0325 also went away.
Bad news: I get a P1320 error now. The car feels good...is this common with the cheapie eBay coils, or is one of them actually bad?
