Update on 98 Maxima SE Starting Problems
Ok, thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I guess this afternoon and weekend, I am going to use your suggestions in this order to try to get it up and running:
1.) use multimeter to check ignition switch, neutral safety switch, and possibly starter relay and starter if I need to.
2.) check all battery cables going to starter, and ground and sand them and clean them, and secure all connections
3.) Use the suggestion about pulling the ignition switch out and using screwdriver to try to crank. If it works, then I will try to do the electrical tape thing.
4.) Possibly buy new ignition switch.
5.) If none of the above has it up and running, I gues I will try to replace the stater and starter relay. (are there any other parts to the starter that I may need to buy,...or do I just buy the starter and relay??)
Ok,...I need some suggestions as to if I should buy the origional nissan parts for either the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, and the starter and starter relay....or should I just go up to Auto Zone, Advanced, or Napa? Does it make a difference?? I don't know much about cars, so I would appreciate some advice.
If you can give some suggestions, please read all my posts above to give you an idea of what is going on with my car.
Thanks,
Jeremy

The starter still seems to be slightly slower, and makes a grrr sound as soon as the car cranks. So we are thinking the starter may be a little weak. Thinking about going ahead and getting a new starter.

Ok...we took the old starter out because it would start once or twice, but then it would do nothing. So we would hit the starter with a hammer, and then try again, and it would start. Sometimes when we would hit it with a hammer and then try, it would try to crank,...but it seems like the starter was struggling.
So, like I said, we took the starter out, and will go to buy a new one in the morning and put it in.
For the record, I will give another update when we get it all in to let you know if we are successful here in fixing this long problem. Thanks!

Final Update: 98 Maxima SE Starting Problems Solved
The problem with my no crank issues was solved today as I put in a new starter from Advanced Auto Parts. Everything is up and running great. Thanks to maxima.org and all those great suggestions here.
My origional problem of a no crank situation that has been happening a couple times a year ever since the car was new is some other issue. I believe that issue has something to do with the neutral safety switch not working right sometimes because I have been able to fix that no-crank almost everytime over the years by running the auto shift gear selector through all gears (PRD21) and back up. After I do that, the car would start. Because of this problem over the years, I was really confused this time since the gear shift fix would not work. But now with a new starter, everything is great!
Thanks again!

This didnt do it for me...
I have a 99 that has been having similar problems. I put a new starter in it about a month ago after it wouldnt start and it worked great for about a month now. Until the other day and now sometimes it will start and sometimes it wont (kinda fell like buying a lottery ticket when it does work...hahaha) Anyways, last weekend I took the new starter and the battery out and had them tested. They both passed with flying colors. I got back home and reinstalled them both. The car started right up and work great for about two days. Now I am back to having the same problem.
When I turn the iginition key, all I get is one loud click from the engine. All the lights work great and like I said when it wants to it will turn over fine, but otherwise all I get is one click each time I turn the key. Any ideas?

Was the new starter a brand new OEM or a re-conditioned one? I had a "new" starter crap out after just a couple of months. It can be hit and miss with rebuilt starters. If it always works fine for a bit after removing and reinstalling, it could be a loose or bare wire going to the starter.

Well have you tried adjusting the inhibitor switch?

so my boys maxima is having a hard time starting. When you turn the key it is hesitant when starting. Like when you turn the key, its like 2 seconds before anything even works. What could be wrong
::EDIT:: After not getting far with his details, I went to check it out. The car does crank off the bat, you just hear the alt crank like 10 times. Its got a new alt and battery. It only does this after the car has set for a few hours(2 or more). Im leaning towards the fuel pressure regulator. What do yall think??

-Manual Instructions-
1) Disconnect the Mass Air Flow sensor
2) Start engine at idle for at least 3 seconds
3) Reconnect MAF sensor and verify that you have a code 12 tripped on your MIL (Check Engine Light) for more info on codes see link at bottom.
4) Clear code by following:
a) Removing kick panel on the right side of drivers floor board
b) Ignition “ON” - Insert screwdriver into the ECM (Engine Control Module)
c) Ignition “ON” - Turn the screw carefully clockwise
d) Ignition “ON” - Within 2 sec turn counter clockwise and verify CEL is now glowing solid
e) Ignition “OFF”
5) Start car and idle for 10 min (this rebuilds the self-learning coefficient)
6) If you get a code of 76 while idling have your injectors checked.
7) If any problems on how to read or clear codes see sticky on "Check Engine Light..."
