RPM drop at stop

I have a 96 w/ 5speed...lately, the rpms drop rapidly when I take out of gear right at stop. If I take out of gear way before stop and coast up, there is no problem. Sometimes, if RPM drop is too quick, it will stall...but usually it just drops below 500RPM and pulls itself back up to about 750/800 (normal idle w/AC)without stall. NO issues on idle or takeoff. Is there an idle stop/throttle cable tension that needs ajustment?? This just started a coupla weeks ago and car runs beautifully otherwise! Small, but irritating, problem. Thanks y'all

Lets see... it stutters when you start idling... idling... hmmm... IDLE air control valve maybe?

Dont adjust that screw on the top.

There is a small screw that does control the throttle plate stop position. I wouldn't touch that until I was sure that was the problem. Might be like putting a bandaid on the broken arm.

OP: As said, check and thoroughly clean the IACV and TB, and properly adjust your idle. 800 is a bit high.

And you never want to touch the throttle plate stop screw unless absolutely necessary. In most cases you never have to, not without some serious modifications. You are supposed to use the black plastic idle adjust screw on top of the IACV.

I'd also check for a vacuum leak .... I know this is a 'somewhat' common problem for us 5spd guys .... at least I know of it happening to a few members, myself being one of them. I cleaned / checked everything ... was no change. Mine was acutally worse though ... would stall if in 'N' and coming to a stop, but not in gear. Dunno ... but, I did find that my CAI plate had come apart and left a gaping hole. Once I fixed that, hasn't done it since. So ... something to check. Now that I've jinxed myself here ... I'm gonna quit.

The one I specifically mentioned that you should not touch? Just play around with it, you'll see how it works. Good luck ever getting it back to the factory setting, though.

have you searched? I know theres a lot of people with this common problem, I had a similar problem to this and I ended up needing a new iacv, but you will get a code, i believe even if it just needs a cleaning. Also your idle, when it doesn't drop and stall out where does it sit? does it only happen when you push the clutch in and then recover? i used to tap the gas a little when i pushed the car into neutral and that kept it from stalling until you find your problem.
