Can a 2002 6 speed manual bolt on to a 4th gen directly????
How possible is this??? I'm interested in buying a new/used transmission for my 4th gen. Unfortunately due to a poor rebuild I'd like to replace my current transmission for a newer of less used one. I would like to know whether or not a 2002 6 speed manual would bolt in, and are there any issues you can think of when trying to accomplish this transplant. I think that because all of the 4th & 5th gen's use the same engine block that the 6 speed should bolt on rather easily. I'd be willing to pay top dollar for the 6 speed tranny because I believe its benefits are more than just bragging rights of saying I have a 6 speed. First with a taller overdrive gear (6th) I should observe better fuel economy. And I can imagine that the other 5 gear ratios would take advantage of the VQ's great midrange. Plus the helical limited slip differential would definitely be an improvement over the viscous limited slip differential already offered for I30t, and Canadian model Maxima's. With the Quaiffe LSD costing near $1400 and a used transmission usually costing about another $1000 (depending on condition) I dont think it would be too hard to find a crashed 2002 6 speed in upcoming months for a decent price (i.e. $1500-$2000)
So what do you guys think???
PS: I used the search function and didn't come up with anything

The 6speed was introduced with the 3.5L engine. It was never used on the 3.0L engine. I doubt that the 3.5 and 3.0 blocks are identical in terms of how the tranny bolts up, so I doubt the 6 speed would fit your car. I'm sure the driveshafts have also been beefed up for the 3.5L, so from that perspective I also doubt your 3.0L driveshafts will work with the 6 speed.
I think your best bet would be to find a used 2000/2001 5speed canadian Maxima or I30 5 speed tranny. You'll likely have a much better chance of it fitting, although I don't know for sure and know of no one that's done that upgrade.
FYI I put in a used 96 canadian SE 5speed when my tranny died. It has the limited slip differential and it DOES make a difference, especially in rain and slick conditions. It still has the same crappy internals as my original tranny, though. The 2000/2001 trannies were beefed up a little at least.

Keven.. did you get drive shafts also? or just the tranny?
2ndMax.. if you want 6spd.. get an LSD tranny.. take it to a tranny shop.. pay them enormous amounts of money to duplicate 4th gear and add it on.. boom you have 6spd

Nope, just need the LSD transmission. The existing driveshafts bolted right up. This is for a 5 speed only.
Now automatics do need to replace the driver's side axle shaft. I think that's all they need, though. Still pretty simple.

Okay thanks for the advice, but.............
Are the 2000-01 Five speed manuals the same as those found in 4th gens??? I'd prefer to get a 2000-01 manual because it was designed from the factory to withstand more power. If I could get my hands on one of these tranny's with LSD (of course) maybe from a Canadian model then would that work? I'm looking to put replace my current transmission and never look back. So if possible I'd like to do it with the best parts available.
Hollah back fellas.
And thanks for the info contributed so far.

How about this idea, just get the engine and the tranny from the new 6speed and that should bolt right up to a 4th or 5th gen right? I would think that everything is the same, except the bore of the new vq and the tranny is mounted up differently, then you would have 255hp and a 6speed in a light weight 4th gen, and it would haul a$$

I too considered this as an option if I were to keep my car, since my transmission just blew up. I already have a Quaife so thats already there, but the other thing is I dunno if the Quaife would fit. I know the quaife fits the 2000-2001 trannys.
Right now I need to either find a new transmission or just replace the internals. My 2nd gear was toast, on the input shaft side it sheared it clean of teeth.
However, realistically speaking even if the thing fits, there probably arent too many wrecked 6 speeds just laying around.

You're forgetting another important difference: the '02 6-speed is cable shifted where the '01-down are rod shifted. I can't see this upgrade being possible.
