CAli-Spec Engine

CAli-Spec Engine
I was wondering if since I have a Ca-Spec engine if there are any parts in general that are holding back any power. Such as the muffler. I was told that the muffler on the CA-Spec Max robs a bit more power than the fed- spec ones do. Is there any truth to this? Or is there anywhere else that replacing parts with aftermarket or fed spec ones will give me more power?

Hey Sudz, did you purchase your car in Massachusetts? Cuz I think I have a CA spec Maxima also, and it was bought at Quirk Nissan in Braintree.. I'm just wondering why the hell they were selling those in the northeast... hmm... but I live in Cali now so I guess it all works out..

Actually, there has been some confusion regarding a "CA spec" 4th gen.
Apparently the 99 Maximas have the four O2 sensors and the additional precat which requires a different Y-pipe. As far as I know the 95-98's all have similar exhaust arrangements, and on Cattman's site, it says that ALL 95-98's use the YG-4 Y-pipe, whereas the 99 (with the two extra plugs in front of the engine) needs a special pipe.
I purchased my 97 Maxima in California, and it does not have the two extra O2 sensors. I am also unaware of any precat differences between a 97 CA and non CA 97 Maxima. I think that the main difference may be the evaporative emissions system in the CA spec models from 95-98. There may be a difference in type of O2 sensor as well, but not number of sensors. Courtesyparts.com lists a different part number for rear O2 sensors for 95-96 vs 97+ Maxima 4th gens.

differences with cali spec are.
1. Lower intake manifold has throttle body like baffles that open and close I guess for emissions.
2. If you get an aftermarket Y pipe you can use a fed. spec. if you change the front manifold and add 2 O2 sensor fittings, otherwise youll still have that heap of crap they call a precat, even if you get the cali spec Y pipe it doesnt eliminate the front precat.
you can change both of these if you can find the parts. Ive changed the lower intake manifold and front exhaust manifold and Im using a fed spec Y pipe with 2 additional O2 fitings on my 99.

You must have a check engine light on most of the time.

I believe that the 99 has different emissions equipment than 95-98. So, we have more than just "CA spec" and "Fed spec" going on here. Like I wrote before, the 99 has two additional O2 sensors that the 95-98 do not have, regardless of whether you purchased in CA or not.
