Has Anyone Tried Custom Maxima's Own CatBack Exhaust??

I've been looking into Catback Exhaust and I've been told that Custom Maxima's Catback is really good for the price. A friend of mine got it for his third gen Max and it hooked fairly easly w/small modifications since it was intended for a 4th generation. My friend got it cause a buddy of his put it on his 4th gen and was saying good things about it, especially that he payed so little and he was impressed. I'm curious to know if what I'm hearing is true cause I'm interested.

I don't think anyone has dyno'd the Custom Maxima exhausts. There was a 5th gen that recorded a sound clip, but nothing for 4th gens...

I was up and ready to buy one when Custom Maxima introduced them months ago. I had asked them about performance gains because their exhausts have a crimp in the b pipe after the resonator just like the stock b pipe and got no reply. Not to mention they look strikingly similar to eBay exhausts..

I believe I posted a pic comparing the Custom Maxima b pipe with another b pipe; I'll see if I can dig it up.

Not a comparison, but http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generation-maxima-1995-1999/603307-has-anyone-got-custommaxima-com-catback-they-make.html

The dude who calls himself BigMike said on that last thread about this topic that he installed this catback on his 4th gen and like it plus noticed some gains. A friend of a friend has installed this on his third gen, I don't know what he did but it sounds good, he said the 4th/3rd gens are very similar. The original person w/the 4th gen I don't know personally so I can't get clips or even seen it, just heard it was good. If it's good on a 3rd gen then it would be good on my wife's 4th gen, right? I have a 3rd gen w/less miles than her 96' though, 150 thousand, not bad 4 a 20 year old ride.

Im seriously debating getting it. And there is a sound clip on their website, here.
http://www.custommaxima.com/product/...m/Default.aspx

Towards the bottom.

It sounds nice, and even if it doesnt add to much power you can still say "hey, ive got a catback" lol

Yeah but the power gains will come from a good highflow cat, good y-pipe and some good headers, plus a good intake setup. I figure w/ all that stuff it should work good. If I like on the 4th gen I might hook it up on my 3rd gen but would have 2 look and compare both under carriages, which look very similar and basically have same engines anyway.

Yea, gains would for sure come from other stuff. But my muffler is about to fall off lol. I was looking at a flowmaster 50 that was 110. So my logic is, why not get a cat back that sounds decent for just 40 more?

Sounds good, give it a shot and I think you'll be happy, especially for the price man. I'm gonna get it myself and see if it sounds good 4 the 4th gen and if so I'm gonna put on 3rd gen also. I already ordered a high flow cat from warpspeed and will be getting a y-pipe from them and some headers too.

I got an eBay catback that looks 100% identical to CM's and I love how it sounds. I have a sound clip on YouTube, just look up my username.

I believe mine was a little cheaper. Got it from a seller by the name of "kensai". His name is stamped on the muffler.

No problem, here's a pic of it before I installed it:

Nope, never afraid to take it all the way up there like some are. Now that the exhaust is a little broken in, the tone has deepened and I love it.

For everyone whos too lazy to go on YouTube and search:

I don't know man, I can't believe that sound for that price, I'm impressed. Do you have anything done to the exhaust or intake?

How much did U pay? I ordered CM's already for 160.00 plus ship/handling, I found something on ebay similar to theres, ZOMK Speed for like 100.00 plus ship/hand., anyway mine should be here in a couple of days with new high flow cat and O2 sensor and then I can finish suspension work on my other whip.

The rest of the exhaust is stock, and I have a Bomz intake with a K&N filter. That's it.

You think too much flow w/after market y-pipe, what do you think the muffler can't handle it? If that's the case maybe I won't do the y-pipe w/ that set up for now and just do what I was gonna do w/intake. Thanks again 4 the heads up my dude.

Too raspy for my liking. It would sound better with the stock y-pipe and silencer out.

True, but really what i would get away from is the y-pipe and the head
ers, my headers on the side of the firewall had 3 holes !!! on the joint and
they didnt match with the y-pipe, i had to take it to a welder 3 times to widen
he holes. Its really just a waste.

On another note, i got a CEL after the second week and the pull was incredible,
even after 5k rpm, theres no drop like before ( i never had pipes on a car, im n
ew to this), but now the CEL went off and and it dosent pull that hard anymore,
do i still need to get the o2sim ?

Im buying mine on ebay, its the exact same as the custommax one. Im buying it simply b.c my stock exhaust is rusted to hell. New piping and a muffler for 170 plus install, i can handle that, even if it is ebay. That video Chris posted sold me.

By the way, how was the fit chris? Did it all line up?

Some people aren't gonna like it cause it's cheap, meaning low cost, just cause something is more expensive doesn't always mean it's better, alot of the time the more you pay the better something is but some companies way over charge for there products. Greddy evo system is like 700.00 for just the catback and then you need a cat, y-pipe and headers still. I can't afford that and can't see spending that much right now. If I ever get my Max the way I see her in my head, yes I would upgrade to the best but for now I'm looking for atleast decent. From what I've seen so far on the catbacks I like, for the money I really like. If I had the dough to spend I'd get a new or almost new Max and dump a shiit load of money in that but for this is what I'm working with. Not to leave out that the exhaust is totally rotted out from the cat to the muffler, so I gotta do something and quick, quick is like 500.00. Mine is on the way and so is the cat/O2 sensor.

Rear O2 is in the cat or right after it (depending on whether you have a '95-'96 or '97-'99) and shouldn't effect power or MPG.

i bought this catback.... its alright, i mean you get what you pay for. i also have a warpspeed y pipe so i dont know how how much that would affect the sound. my brother has a stillen muffler and b pipe on his car and his has a much more deeper and smoother sound, then again i dont know if its because he also has a CAI which i have yet to buy.

i also wish that the muffler didnt hang so low, i think it looks kind of cheesy...but of course i could probably just have that adjusted by someone but i dont have the patience to look into it lol ill post a video later

If you don't like the sound of the system you can always change out the muffler later, like somebody already said"it's just fuuckin' piping!!", from what I've seen it's real good for the chedder. I'm not spending 700.00 fuuckin' bones for an Evo II catback, fuuck that shiit!!! I need to change out my resonator pipe so fuuck it!!! I've seen them in person and they sound great and with the right intake, cat, y-pipe and header's it'll sound fuuckin' tight!!!

There are only so many places that these knock off exhausts are being made. My personal theory, having listened to hours of exhaust clips on youtube for every car I could find, is that the ebay catbacks are made in china generic knock offs of apexi N1s and sound pretty much the same. the ebay n1s are maybe a bit buzzier but it really depends on the cars and probably varies from generic seller to generic seller depending on what factory they got it from. I would assume (or at least hope) that the materials on the genuine n1's are better - welds, steel, etc, but I couldn't say for sure. the n1 is TIG welded, no idea about the ebay exhausts, but they are both 304 SS.

The consensus is that the custom maxima exhaust is pretty much the same thing as the ebay n1 exhausts, but as for Megan... I've come across some threads in the honda forums where people have suggested that megan might rebrand generic ebay stuff. I think the megan is the same as the ebay exhaust or at least from the same factory or same knockoff design of the n1.

Bottom line, they're all pretty much n1 knockoffs and they're pretty good at that if not identical to each other - megan, ebay, custom maxima. The original apexi n1 might be a bit better but tbh, if you're getting an n1 style turbo muffler it's going to be loud and its going to have "that" sound. Doesn't matter if it's a civic, a taurus, or even a maxima, they'll all have approximately the same sound.

given how affordable and decent the ebay exhausts sound, I'll be getting one. And when I get tired of the drone from the n1, which might take a while, I'll just get a stock muffler put on it and i'll have a full mandrel bent 304 catback for under $250.

I have no idea why I just wrote so damn much.

Im the one who said its just pipes haha, exactly why i bought my ebay one today

You sir, are a genius
