defective starter solenoid?

defective starter solenoid?
This afternoon the car wouldn't start and gave no clicking noise. I slightly tapped the starter and it started fine. When I got home I took apart the starter and the gears were fairly lubricated so I just added a little more lithium grease. The positive wire on the solenoid was clean and I already had an 8AWG ground wire on the starter mounting bolt.
When a starter requires tapping is it the solenoid that's defective? Autozone sells the starter for $110 + core but the solenoid only costs $40.

For the last 2 weeks the starter has given metal-scratching first starts during these cold mornings. I estimate that the solenoid is not activating the lever to pull the main gear back quick enough. That and along with the fact I got no click when I tried starting it yesterday tells me it's the solenoid switch that needs replacement. She started right after I lightly tapped the starter. If the brushes were the culprit then I still would of heard the solenoid switch click shut when I tried starting it.
I'm replacing that solenoid switch tomorrow. I'll also check and lubricate the brushes. If they're worn down I'll order a new set from courtesyparts.com

After replacing that solenoid switch and regreasing the gears & motor she now starts quick and quiet. That switch was defective.
The brushes were wearing out but the springs still forced them snug against the motor. I ordered a new brush set (RX-140) from rockauto for $33 total. I'll throw it in sometime next summer.
It's easy to replace the starter but I've read that many of you have had short life with aftermarket starters so I decided to refurbish the original.

Replacing that solenoid switch is as easy as replacing the starter. Read post 13 that I made on this thread a few months ago:
