New to all of this...

Guys i am new to the world of maxima-i am about to be an owner of one by the end of this week. i am thinking of a 4th gen maxima, between a 95-97 year model, with the SE trim package with a five speed-what is the best year to get? Any warnings about these cars or anything i should look for as far as things that could be easily covered up on these cars? What problems are easy to identify? What are the handling characteristics of thses cars? I had a 5th gen accord before. Does the hanling appear to be anything like the accord? Sorry for being all questions. I just need to know all that i can. any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks
mike

I would go with a 97-99 SE, mostly because of the cosmetic differences. Try searching, because there was a post similar to this a couple days or weeks ago.

A5295, all you really have to do is just "lurk" around here for awhile if you want to learn stuff. I was on here for about a month before I made my first post. Make use of the search function too, or else you will most likely get flamed. I'm sure I've asked some dumb questions, and still do.... Have you even driven one of the cars that you are looking at yet?

a bad one does the 1/4 mile in 13 secs and is very naughty .. a good one is the stock automatic that runs 15 seconds

i think the 97-99 ones look the best, the 95's are known to have crummy starters, however, the 95's are the lightest and they just keep getting heavier through the years, i don't know how much though. the 99's are the weird ones, they dont have 194 bulbs behind the dash, the y-pipes for cali fit on the 5th gen's as well, the strut tower braces are different sized bolts. my recommendation to you is to get as loaded as possible 97-98. Bose is a must if you arent going to upgrade stereo right away, it sounds very nice in my car. But most of all, love whatever car you get and look around this place, it's the most maxima informative place i've found. also good places for parts and stuff are www.custommaxima.com www.avalonracing.net www.eatricezone.com www.stillen.com www.tustinnissan.com www.courtesynissan.com www.cattman.com www.warpspeedperformance.com the parts section of the forums, yo_its_ok and 97GLES sp?

I was here for a couple of months before I bought my Max. I learned alot which helped me in buying my 97 SE. This place is THE Place.

One thing I can add is a 97 is probably going to have about 65,000 miles or less. Everyone that I test drove had a tight front end.
So expect the same. But look for some possible looseness at around 70 MPH. There's been some complaints about this problem here and I haven't quite figured out why mine does this. It's been suggested that the steering rack needs adjustment. Maybe. I'm presently trying different tire pressures.

Subscibe to Carfax.com.

I was looking at 5 speeds too but it is hard to find one that isn't beat or hasn't been wrapped around a pole or tree. I couldn't wait anymore and bought a auto$#@%. If you have time you can find a good one. Yep I like my Bose too and the bunwarmers ain't bad these days either.

I have a '97 green max SE, fully loaded....and I luuuuuuuuuuv it! I went with the 5 speed, that's the only way to go! The only bad thing I have heard about the manual max is that the clutch wears out faster than it should. It is believed that the torque and power of the engine is too much for the clutch lining. I have known of one case where the clutch went out after only 30K miles....I think he was riding the clutch myself. Mine's at almost 60K and going strong.

The guys on the Forum are very helpful! You'll learn a lot ...as I did. I have only been on for less than a month now, and have a lot of mods coming up:

CAI, Nitrous, Lowering springs, Y pipe, clear corners, are all on order and there's more to come...there's so much you can do with it!

Enjoy!
