I was considering buying a 98 maxima SE to replace my 3rd gen. The guy wants 2700 for it with about $900 dwn. It has a clean engine, tranny fluid looks good, starts right up, k and n filter, clean leather, and runs quiet. Only thing that scares me is the high mileage. Car has 222,000 miles. Tranny shifts smooth. I don't wanna hav to fix things all the time, like fuel injectors are a common thing on 3rd gen vg engines. Is this a good buy? What else do I need to look out for?

$2700 is a lot for that mileage. I paid $2500 for mine with 84K on it. Work him down a lot on that price or find another.

when i bought my current 4th gen i paid $2000. My car had 202000 on it. The body was mint same as the leather everything worked and it ran very well. I had to replace the motor last year buy that was due to my own doin. 75shot at englishtown. But past that ive had no really big issues with my car. normal repairs and so on. but its a matter of what you wanna do... if the car is worth it try to work him down. But IMO on a mileage aspect as long as the previous owner took care of it these motors will last!!!!

yeah im currently sitting at 365,000k and she still pulls hard! minor repairs here and there, but the engine runs beautifully! Body is still mint and interior is next to flawless... previous owner was the original owner from '97 though and she took great care of it.

I paid $1600 at 250K and knowing what I do now would pay $2000 for the same mileage baring any major issues. These cars are built like tanks and with proper maintenance, high mileage alone should not be a detractor.

I paid 2600$ for mine at 126k miles. No major engine malfunctions and body was in good shape. Clean title too boot! But for a car with over 200k on it you shouldn't pay more then 1k if that!

you have no idea how well the previous owner took care of the car, i wouldnt buy any car with that kind of mileage. i mean for the right price ... but if he really took care of it it would be worth more to him than me.

wow tired...i hope that came out right.

Get him down about $800-$1000.

Check for rust rot at radiator support as mentioned

Bring a code reader and check for a hidden KS code.

too much, i've had a 97 auto with 117k for 2400, and a 5spd 99 with 175k for 2000. youre paying a lot, but then again i don't know how easy it is to find a maxima down where youre at. theres a hoard of them up here.

this thread just depressed me
i paid 3200 for my car at a dealership by me about 2 years ago it had 177k on it when i bought it i love my max to death. this is by far one of the most reliable cars ive ever owned.

and man do they take a beating about two weeks ago i took my car to the 1/4 mile (i had 224k on it) and beat the living daylights out of it all day.

16 runs a 1/4 tank of gas and 4 miles later it actually feels faster. but i know thats not true cuz it was extremely consistent

i say go for it

I payed $2,300 for mine with 248,000 on the clock. It came with lots of goodies though, Greedy Exhaust, 2inch drop on Kyb's, 7" touch screen Double Din DVD player, xenon's, new clutch, and lots of other new parts.

It all depends on the condition, maintenance, rust, and many other factors. If the car was really well taken car of, It's probably worth the money. Still doesn't hurt to try talking them down on the price though.

That's because you bought it from a stealership. My buddy bought a 1994 Accord with 150k in fair condition from a dealer for $4,800. Dealers rip you off like no other.

No kidding. Not only do they rip you off when buying a car, they rip you off later on servicing it. They wanted to charge me $1200 just to replace a knock sensor and O2 sensor. $250 just for the ks alone! I hate dealerships!

as long as it has a new sticker i would pay up to a grand. but as far as the miles i wouldnt worry about it. i bought a 95 with 443,000 3 years ago for $300 and shes still solid and going awsome at 455,000 now

I paid 1900 for my 99 and it came with 19" wheels, a double din touchscreen and a nice box in the trunk. It had 199k on the clock and the only thing thats wrong is it needs one of the coils(i think) and i replaced the knock sensor. Other then that i couldnt be happier.

dude, who cares what anyone else thinks. your gonna own it, not them so just talk him down and get it checked out if possible cause there might be a hidden code or a busted cv boot ( axle needing replacement ) or any number of problems. even as old as these cars are they're still not cheap for some repairs.

I paid $2700 for a 1997 Maxima GLE, 112k Miles.

It needed a bit of work, obvious tune up, oil change, I've replaced all brakes and rotors, spark plugs, radiator had a tiny leak. But the body and interior is still flawless.
