cat converter break in time??
hey all, i have to replace my cat with a new one that i got cause i failed emissions 2 weeks ago. i was wondering the best way to get ready for emissions test before i go in as i usually just put premium in and some chevron techron to clean it up ahead of time. i know to warm her up first, is there a break in time on the new cat?? thanks

This is New! Never heard of breaking in a cat! When you break it in what changing, it's muffler bearing dimensions???? It's a reactor.....You can break in an exhaust system in a sense (build up of soot that usually quiets the exhaust) . Once the soot is on the interior of the exhaust it doesn't reflect the sound waves the same and the sound becames more tamed! The cat is simple burning the contaminants away!

i failed all 3 tests and the cat is 17 years old. the honeycombs inside the cat that break down the emissions were'nt working to do that. i also cleaned the uim and checked multiple other things and my mechanic said that sounds like the cat to him. i know the egr could be messing up as well, gas issues, etc. if i dont pass with the new cat ill do the egr valve next.

i looked this up in google and found this answer, i knew it!!!
yes, there is a quick burn-in period. The catalytic converter will smell like burning metal for a short time until it develops an oxidation layer on the OUTSIDE of it. Not to mention it is stressed by torsional forces when it is welded in place until it reaches 650F, where the outer case anneals in it's home position. Basically, I am talking about mechanical break-in......not chemical. The chemistry should not be any different in its performance. Give it 2 days. If it still smells like sulfur....there is a fuel control problem in the system.
