No CEL Misfire issue

hey people,

My car has been pissing me off lately, i havent thrown a code in over a year and there is no way of telling what issue i have. The spark plugs are about a year old and i have no real mods on my car that would effect it.

My issue is what seems to be a misfire.. but it isnt, my coil packs are good and im getting no codes. When im sitting still it sounds identical to a misfire, just kinda bogging down every second or two and when i start moving it kinda holds me back at the time the misfire would be happening. Like something isnt breathing right. i dont understand what it is.

I have an older CAI which never had any problems and i have a straight pipe exhaust which i have had for a while and didnt give me problems.

My car has 173,xxx miles on it and its 5sp. It started about 3 months ago and just gradually gets worse. Today it was happening and my car was back firing unnecessarily, at unusual RPM's, it wasnt making sense. My car just got inspected and passed emissions.

So the question is, what can cause a misfire like issue without throwing a code?? Anyone please help. Anything to point me in the right direction. Thanks!!!

~Francis

i have seen bad coils w/o a cel

when it is misfiring, unplug each coilpack one by one and see if it makes a difference, if it doesn't - you found your problem

your CEL does work, yes? Just want to make sure.

Agree with Kev, unplug coils one by one at idle. The unplugged coil that does NOT change the idle (or changes idle the least) is your bad one.

You should also check to make sure that your injectors are all working. A bad injector can feel like a misfire (i.e. no explosion in that cylinder), but since the plug is still firing you don't get a misfire code. Just fixed up a lady's Sentra at our Car Care Ministry with this problem. We pulled spark plug wires to ID the bad cylinder, but when we tested the spark it was fine. Replacing the injector fixed it right up. Good luck.

Thanks, i was thinking injector but i wasnt sure again if it was possible to have a bad injector and not catch a code. As of now what i am going to try to do is a tune up. New coil packs, new spark plugs, and injectors. I will try that and see if it goes away. Thanks for all the help

THIS...kinda

I've always been under the impression that my car had a soon to be failing ignition coil. Once I did the TC-W3 thing, all symptoms were gone. In other words, I had a sticky fuel injector.

Do the TC-W3;

A failure on the secondary side of the coil cannot be seen by the ecu. It has to be detected by the crank sensors signals.

Same with a fuel injector. Mechanical failure or plugged injector cannot be detected by the ecu. The crank sensor signals help detect these type of misfires which often go undetected until the condition gets worse.

Sometimes injectors just fail and cant be cleaned. Your best bet is to grab a few at a junk yard for a few bucks. The front three take like two minutes to change and you could get lucky if its one of those. Worked wonders for my misfire problem.

the miss will come back when you fill up for gas. It works great until you fill up again. Its a temporary fix, but its not a permanent fix.

What if it doesn't return? I was near E when I put the stuff in and filled up. Are you suggesting if it returns that i need to change my injectors??

like someone else said the misfire will come back, mine did. I used 2 cans of b-12 on 2 tanks of gas, soon as I got near empty the misfire came back worse than before. I even tried seafoam and it didn't help the misfire issue, somtimes fuel injector cleaners don't work on a dead fuel injector. I even used chevron techron as a last resort, still didn't unclog the injector. my car had a leaky rear valve cover gasket and leaking spark plug seals that were getting oil on my coils boot. the misfire all of a sudden just started one day, so I checked all coils and number5 wasn't doing anything, I switched them around and the coil was firing on the other cylinder but not on 5, so to rule out coils I switched again, still same result. ended up being a bad injector, I just replaced it today along with the rear valve cover gasket ect cleaned everything put it all bak togather, and misfire and hesitation are gone on my 95!!

yup mine was number 5, I got tired of it not running right because I could feel the misfire throughout the driving range and it kept getting worse, plus gas mileage was suffering. I took the time to clean and unclog. everything while I had the lid off. now she purrs like a kitten
