Question on Strut mounts

Ok fellas soooo...

Just changed my rear struts, all with new hardware minus the strut mounts. Now my question is, is there a specific direction in which the strut mounts should be bolted (like is one side supposed to be "out") or is the clunking I'm now hearing a result of completely F'd strut mounts??

Look from the trunk, is the top of one of the struts up higher than the other? You might need to get a washer and slide it down the strut shaft until the little stopper when the bushing is supposed to sit and then put the bushing on. Most likely the strut shaft pushed through the bushings and is now clunking

Do you think it'd be the case for both strut mounts? I'm certain I'm hearing the clunking on both sides
