I have a 1997 Nissan Maxima, it came without the fog lights and just has two horizontal pieces of plastic where they should be.

Can I just buy fog lights and mount them and plug them in? the nessessary connections are there, just taped off with electrical tape. . . So can I just install them and they will turn on with the headlights or is there something more like a control unit that needs to be in the car?

Honestly, just get aftermarket fog lights. The OEM fogs are terrible and don't help at all. I had aftermarket fogs that were way better.

But for the whole fog installation, I ran a separate switch, but if you wanted to you could wire in a relay so they would turn on with your headlights. You could wire them into the lows, then they should turn off when you turn on the highs. But you can do whatever you want. Lol. My headlights were terrible so i wired a separate switch so i could have the fogs on with my brights as well, and that helped a lot.

I used to have 98 GXE (no fogs), so I did the following:
1. Got a SE stalk from a junk yard and put it instead of mine (there is a taped off plug for the fogs)
2. Got blue fog light relay from a junk yard and plugged it in the relay box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
3. Cut original plugs from another car
4. Got aftermarket fogs and mounted them in the holes of the bumper. I had to cut the two horizontal plastic pieces first and splice the wires into the plugs I got from the junk yard.

It took 40 bucks and a little work, but it looked good and everything was OEM besides the fogs. I also rewired them to turn on on their own (without having headlights or parking lights on). Hope that helps.

OP, yes you can get a set of OEM fogs and it bolts up directly and Plug N Play.
