oil filter is stuck...
Hey guys I'm in a bit of trouble, I was changing the oil in my 96 and when I got to the filter, it was stuck, I tried with my hands, nothing, a cap wrench, nothing, strap wrench, nothing, cloth for grip with hands, nothing. So I tried the screwdriver trick since all else failed, and it just peeled through it like a can opener, also I've used like a whole can of pb blaster, and I still can't get it to budge, any ideas cause now since it's punctured I can't drive it...thanks guys for any help :-)

I had to have it towed from my driveway just for an oil change and the mechanic used an air hammer to remove it.
Said it was mostly due to not using oil on the gasket before installing.
I should have taken my bill up to the Valvoline quick change shop that had done it previously.

I do my own oil changes no matter what now.
Not using snow as an excuse anymore.

also try removing the plastic fender wall guards. It gives great access to the filter. It will come off but likely after trying a few tools. Another reason I pay more for a K&N oil filter as it has the wrench off capability on its own and pre-drilled for safety wire

Unfortunately you need a metal band wrench. With that pushed all the way down to the base of the filter (strongest part) and some leverage (pipe over the end of wrench) it will move. Leverage is key.

you use a 3/8 ratchet and extension and it will get it off. ive had to use one many times at work when someone else welded the oil filter on. it will get the filter off no problem

I have always hand tightened my oil filters. I check them after a day or two to make sure they stayed tight. Honestly I am surprised you got 2 turns after contact. That is how oil filters get stuck on.

just snug it with your hand, as in when you cant get it any tighter with a loose grip, grip it firm and snug it a tad more. never use a oil filter wrench or the like to tighten it, thats how oil filters get welded on. ive worked on cars where the filter was loose enough i could spin it off with 2 fingers and it wasnt leaking, shows that you dont need to go king kong on them

You are supposed to coat the rubber gasket with some oil before you install the filter. When installing the filter, once the filter makes contact with the engine, you then tighten the filter 2/3 of a turn.

^agree 1000% about smearing oil on the filter gasket before installation; that's a must. As for the 2/3rds, is that what the FSM calls for? It seems about right, but honestly, I've never paid special attention and quantified the amount of revolution I've applied after the filter makes contact.

This happened on my honda, but so far never on my nissan:
I changed my oil and filter as usual. After a week or two, I smelled oil through the vents. I stopped the car and found that I was losing massive amounts of oil. I thought the motor was done for.
It turned out to be that when I removed the filter the old gasket stayed stuck to the motor. So when I put on the new filter, it had 2 gaskets. the car would run fine, but under high oil pressure, oil would burst out. I replaced with a single gasket and all was good.
With our Nissans, it's very easy to see if the gasket is there or not, but sometimes I'll admit I don't eyeball it. The honda has its filter a bit buried. You have to struggle a little to see its mounting point.
From that point onwards I take the one or 2 seconds to actually see that gasket.

How about an actual oil filter wrench for a couple of bucks?

+1 on this - you don't have to do it more than once to learn that two gaskets is NOT better than one!
Best thing to do is check the OLD filter after you remove it and make sure that the gasket is still on it.

im surprised that under high pressure only oil flew out with 2 gaskets, a year ago at work a guy was working on a hot engine, after doing some stuff put a new filter on, and didnt notice the old seal was still on. by that time the owner was a few blocks away, and all you could see is this big *** trail of oil going from the parking lot down the road
lucky she answered her cell phone and shut it off before the engine seized

I've had great success with this tool ^, similar and same concept as the tool posted in post #10. It's only function is to loosen, doesn't tighten.

These ^ratchet cap thingies suck too. Slip like crazy. Worthless.
