Diving into the 95 Maxima heads, I have a few questions

Hello:

I am biting the bullet and doing the 20 plus hour dreaded cylinder head job.
On a 95 Maxima 6 cylinder

Last night I removed the upper and lower intake manifold
and both valve covers.

I have a few questions?

1) The 3 #10mm bolts on the exhaust cover shroud look brittle like they will break.
there is no way to pre oil these bolts, any suggestions?

2) The manual says to remove both the upper and lower oil pans.
I understand the lower MUST be removed to access two bolts to get to the timing cover.
Why does the manual say to remove the upper oil pan?
What advantage is there to remove the upper oil pan?

Thanks
Fixandfly

Those rusted bolts on the exhaust shroud will probably break or round off. This would only be a problem when you wash your engine but not 100% on that. Also, you do not need to remove the Upper Oil pan and not sure why they listed it as such. Maybe to inspect the pistons and main bearings but that's about it.

It's listed that way as the upper should be installed after the timing cover, due to the seal on the bottom of the cover. You can sneak it in place without removing the upper, however.

Will heating the 10mm exhaust bolts keep the bolts from breaking off?
What extra sealing gaskets O rings will I need when I buy the overhaul kit with head bolts?
Are the water pump 2 o-rings included? in this set?

Thanks

- If you have a set of hot spanners (oxy-acetylene) then by all means put a small nozzle on and heat the bolt up. As it's cooling down spray it with WD-40. Could you get an impact wrench on it?

The only bolt I broke was a 10 mm front shroud
I heated it an Chilled the bolt but it was brittle
I was able the drill and easy out
Thanks Clive

Can you get away without using the Gasket separater on page EM-22?

Do you have to replace the Head Bolts?
The chart on page EM-43 on where to measure the bolts is confusing .?

Where do you make the call on replacing the chain and or tensioner etc?

Thanks for the help.
I am up to the chain next
Big job

Thanks
