I know VWs can be modded big time. But, wich VWs are good to play with? I saw a sharp looking 4dr Jetta pass me by on the highway today while I was doing 70mph. I was about to give it a run but, my wife gave me one of those looks. So, I had to let it go.

It was a newer model. No badges, black w/ 18" wheels.
A beutiful car.

I raced my friend's 00 Passat 1.8t, but only to about 45 MPH. I had him by a car length, w/o shifting manually. It would be more, but the altitude here gives the turbo an advantage. We would have taken it further, but we both had our girls in the car. Same look you got.

Hangin w/ a turbo???

that's pretty cool. I tend to respect VWs. My friend with an old Beetle used to hang very close when I used to have a '79rx7. While leaving our other friend with his "stang' laying by the roadside. This guy had a crappy looking old('60-'70???) Beattle popping wheelys and racing hell. He had to keep his toolbox up in the trunk to keep from topping over. hehe
good ol' days.

raced a VR6 Jetta..... WHOA!!!!

i raced my boy who drives a 98 VR6 jetta, let me tell you. that kid made me look like i was standing still. I had no chance in hell to keep up. He has intake,headers,cat-back,short throw and thats it. his car beats mustangs and made me choke when he hit 140 on the Long Island Expressway. Think i can do the 1st ever VR6 transplant into my 96??

an auto max against any 5 speed vr6 vw will lose stock for stock, but a stock 5speed max will beat any stock vr6 vw same for auto vs auto, i ran into a 2k jetta today in mild traffic no badges matching my speed and looking over, so i spot an opening and leave him a good distance behind then slow down ,then i spot him tring to catch up ,i down shift and speed up but he already has the momentum and slides in front me and get this flashes his hazards like he just kicked my ***.ha ha ha

That would be Herbie..and yes he can smoke all of us.

I have a fancy for painting my Max white..and having a red/blue stripe going across it with the numbers 53. Would that make me ricey?? Or sentimental?

I raced a VR6 GTI a little while ago. I can't tell how it really would have turned out. I bounced 1st gear like crazy. But after all the bouncing. He was next to me.. And as soon as I shifted into 3rd (auto) he started walking me. I was actually racing because I was upset at something else.. Stress relief. So I forgot to ask him what mods he had. We stopped at the light and I just asked if he was a VR6. I asked him why he backed down. And he said we could go again full out. I said no. Wasn't in the mood. But he got half a car on me pulling consistantly then he shut down. He had an extra passenger too. I think I could have done better had I not bounced 1st. And if the toe on my front tires had so been messed up. =) My tires were facing the middle of the car pretty badly. I dono how that happened.. =)

The vr6's are pretty quick...

I think the jetta weighs a hundred pounds or so less than our car too. Alot of vws are modded...I know a bunch of guys at a vw/audi shop who do some crazy engine swaps....one with a 1.8T thats chipped, intake, exhaust etc in an older gti...they had a few early 90's golfs there that the owners have dropped 10 grand easily into engine swaps, big brakes etc while leaving the car looking stock...total sleepers/very fast.

my friend had a VW corrado (5 spd)...one of those coupe-like looking VWs that were designed to be a porsche beater in their times...anyways, these cars have a better gearing ratio...than a VW golf..he's raced a couple VW golfs here in school and have beatened them...so I know they are fast.
I have raced him a couple times...on purpose too...we were side by side most of the way...cept I had a one fender ahead of him...! at that time I didn't have my y-pipe just intake and custom welded-on muffler with a big tip! =)

he claimed that his car was chipped, but everytime we raced...he'd lose...so he claimed it to be his "mis-shifts"

now he's got a 1.8T with a chip in it (5 spd)...wonder how I'd match up?
I have a y-pipe and getting the b-pipe and a new muffler (dynomax perhaps?)

I got smoked by a new jetta once...

I was cruisin up 75 north through atlanta. I saw him ahead of me and noticed he had big rims and aftermarket exhaust. He didnt have any badges at all except for the VW logo so I dont know what he had under the hood (I'm guessin VR6 after what happened). I run up on him hard and he goes for it, there's traffic so we stay close. I make it through a hole before him and nail it. I have it floored as I see him back there finally gettin out of the traffic. Just as I'm passing 100mph he flys past me like I was standing still. I said "GAWD DAMN!" and backed off, he kicked my a$$.

When I was looking for a car I test drove the passat, both the normally aspirated and the turbo 5spd. They both drove real nice but there is no way they had the pull the max has. They did handle really well. Maybe the dealer I went to didn't have a passat that's quickest.

Anyway, I have seen some VW golfs sneak up and roll past me while I was crusing at 100mph. I recall Motor Week testing some out on a track and they posted 0-60 time at 6.2secs. With weight so low it doesn't take a whole lot of torque to pull hard at highway speeds.

one of my friends has a vr6 corrado.. we use to toy around before we started modding my car.. with just the intake and greddy exhaust i'd spank him each time.. as for the jetta vr6 i raced this guy a few times and he kept getting spanked.. that was with just intake and exhaust too.. now they're all done for..
