99 Maxima - Putt Putt issues

So I bought this 99 Maxima last year, seems to run good, only had to change starter and cooling / radiator assembly ( WTF did they use plastic for the Radiator ?? )

Anyways got up this morning and the car sounded funny, started it and the muffer sound like putt-putt-putt. I think its a exhaust issue but my Maxima friend told me its something else car has 177K on it.

I check spark plugs and they seemed ok ( normal color on them ) ( Bosch Plat Plus plugs ) and checked ign coils when car was running one at a time... everyone made a difference. I have been reading left and right threads on issues.

It will run and idle its sluggish when you try to take off but will rpm up to 4K easy and go.. just not like it used too. Also notice few minutes ago the IDLE drops to 600 ish RPM in drive.

Love this car help me get her running good!!!

Anyone else know what I can check??

mine started doing that this winter . so far ive found that my intake manifold is leaking i heard a hissing around it and felt around it while it was running . i had a lean code from bank 2 so im pretty sure thats why at least i hope replacing that fixes the problem . just havent decided if i will just get a new gasket from nissan or go the nwp route when i do change it im gonna change the knock sensor .

sounds like a misfire. If you have ruled out the plugs and coils could possibly be wires or an injector out of spec. if you find the rpm is dropping too low when putting it in gear try also checking to see if you have any vacume leaks. Vacume hoses can tend to dry and crack over time or maybe one has come off somewhere.

Almost every manufacturer uses plastic radiator tanks now.

For whatever reason, Maximas don't like Bosch plugs. You can search around here for evidence. Change them out for NGK soon.

Ok I will change them out, it has had 20K on the Bosch it since I bought from a guy last year. Its the ones that has the white colored platinum center electrode. I never liked those I have always used NGK in my Mitsubishi or Nissan's.

A bad coilpack doesn't always throw a code, but it's symptoms will be present. Testing them is often inconclusive and misleading. I hate coilpack issues because of this.

If your coilpacks are original OEM, chances are 1 or more are acting up as 99's are notorious for having coilpack issues.

It could also be an injector issue, maybe even something simple as a vacuum leak (although finding the leak often isn't simple). Change out those spark plugs for NGK when you can too as stated.
