Dont be fooled by your valve cover saying 'twin cam', and in his engine bay it says 'four cam', you both got 4 cams, and he's got a slight edge in hp, I think it is like 210 or something close like that, but his car is heavier than yours, so you'll smoke em quite easily, unless he has pressure........But really, I'd put $$$ on you, auto or stick, you'll toast him.

Are you automatic or manual?? I used to be automatic in my 95 se, and my friend have a avalon.. it was pretty close but I could edge him out.. we were both basically unmodded(i had intake).. I then converted my car to 5spd and I can STOMP him at any speed - off the line, interstate, etc...

Goodluck

dude, simmer... alright, now think about it with a level head. you have 190HP, he has about 210HP. you weigh about 3150(i think). he's closer to 3800 if not more. you have a VQ30DE, perhaps one of the best V6s to ever be made. besides, you drive a NISSAN.

What has the world come to? We're actually comparing our sports sedan to a fullsize luxury sedan designed for 60 year old ladies.

Its not that slow but not fast. Maxima should take him. My friend has the same avalon and its pretty quick for a big car but not quick enough.

cams control the intake and exhaust valves in your engine... the more cams you have, the more valves you can control, thus cars with 'dual overhead cams, or twin cams, or 4 cams' can control more valves (which aparently is more efficient) than the old 2 valve per cylinder design..

the reason it says twin is that it is 2 cams PER BANK OF CYLINDERS...you have two banks, because you have a v-6, if you had an inline 4, inline 6 or whatever, a twin cam would mean a total of two cams, for there is only one bank of cylinders...

im not saying this is true...buy our engines may have a flatter torque curve, meaning that we get better power over a broader range of engine speeds. in other words a car may have 300 ft/lbs of torque at 3300 rpm, but if, on either sides of that peak, the torque curve drops steeply, the engine isn't worth much for it cannot maintain a good power level on a broad range of engine speeds....

the main reason the max would spank the avalon is weight difference... from what i have found , the avalon probably weighs 3400 lbs (and that is BEFORE all his mods) and has 200hp/214 ft/lbs torque, and you weigh around 3100 with 190 hp/205ft lbs. if we were to strictly compare torque (which BY ALL MEANS is not a good representation of who is faster...torque curves, gearing, efficiencies and more have to do with that) the avalon would have .062 ft lbs of torque per pound of weight whereas you would have .066 ft lbs per pound, a difference of 5% in your favor...

Yeah I would not call the Maxima a sports sedan either. It may be a "sporty" sedan, but certainly not a true sports sedan like say, BMW 3 or 5 series (drive them and you will understand).

In terms of engines, yes the VQ in the 4th gen is excellent, but so is the 1ZFE (I think that's the designation for Toyota's 3.0L V6). In fact, I would say that the 3.0L V6 in my mom's 99 Camry is SMOOTHER than my V6. As for power, it's pretty much a wash. The 98 Avalon was still the older style, so I'm not sure if it had 210hp (like the 2k+ models) or 192hp like the older gen Avalon. Either way, a 4th gen auto should be pretty even or faster than the Avalon. But when it comes to ride comfort and build quality, Avalon wins no contest.

Re: gimme some dirt on a toyota avalon

According to edmunds.com, an Avalon has the following:

Acceleration (0-60 mph): 8.7 sec.
Horsepower: 200 hp @ 5200 rpm
Torque: 214 ft-lbs. @ 4400 rpm
Weight: 3340 lbs.

I'm pretty sure everyone on this board has a better 0-60 than that (assuming they were concious when driving), whether 5spd or automagic. Plus, your max weighs in at a mere 3001 lbs.

Now go get your self a nice wooden paddle and some books so you can spank his *** and edumacate him a little

Just cuz it "feels" smoother behind the wheel, doesn't mean that the motor itself is smoother and better balanced. Alls that means is that Toyota has gone through more to isolate vibration from reaching the driver.

DrivinDaMax98: Don't worry about it. His car may be built better, but yours is quicker, handles better and has soul. Avalons (oversized Camrys) have no soul.

dirt on the Avalon?

oh its slow

thats it... V6 Camry atleast hangs with an auto max, and add another 500 pounds and wat do ya get? Avalon!

and I think the 1998 models had 192hp, I'm not sure I'm not sure when the redesign came that gave em the useless hp

My mom drives an Avalon, and the engine is smooth, but I doubt it's as quick as a 4th gen auto. I don't know if it's just the Avalon or automatic tranny's in general, but the gearing is definitely not optimal for speeds above around 70 mph.

thanks guys for the encouragement, thats what i was looking for. i do belive he has the 210hp. he says his 98 is the quickest one compared with the other years which is b/s im sure.

BTW, they have been calling the maxima a sports sedan since the 3rd generation or earlier (dont think so tho). Its not classified as one.. but to not be so expensive as a BMW I think the max is plenty sporty. not to mention you could just throw on a supercharger or turbo and a few mods to get you the extra power for less than you could buy the so-called "sports sedans" like bmw.. and nobody would even know you'd be that quick, which i think is way better... anyway, I will try and race hime sometime ill let yall know what happens.

Totally agree. I don't think the Maxima never stopped being a sports sedan, they just marketed it differently. Probably went hush hush on the 4DSC thing because of insurance/marketing etc after the 3rd gen.

Think about the commercials, a 4th gen flies thru a desert to catch and board onto an airplane that was in the middle of taking off!

a 5th gen, sitting and enjoying the sunset, all of a sudeen sees the sun disappear, and the 5th gen goes after it, running thru the 5 gears with race car precision. And he catches the sun

Yeah, the Maxima is still a sports sedan.

Run what ya brung.

I have raced and beaten a '98 Avalon, dont know the trim level....It was as easy as most other cars I race. I'm Pretty lucky, tho; the only import I've ever lost to is an Acura 3.2 CL...He pulled an pulled an pulled. I'm more worried about the Accord V6 I'm racing soon....

Remember, he's got them big rims. Those'll slow him down some. But you'll definently win. Put money on the race, and do it in front of his girlfriend.
