any body do this mod, will a set of hids fit and whats the light output like. I ask because the light housing has some type of metal piece in there i think it may block the bulb or something.
An H3 HID bulb will be too long to fit in the stock housing. You need to look for an H3C bulb which is shorter and will fit. As for light output, someone else will need to chime in as I wouldn't know.
You can put the bulbs in there but it doesn't mean it was meant to run with those bulbs. The proper way would be to have projectors. Halogen housings are not meant for high intensity discharge bulbs. You can retrofit projectors in there. What does all that mean? You're probably going to disregard all that and put them in anyway. Enjoy your bright lights.
I agree with this one, the light dispersement will be all over the place with HIDS in a housing only meant for incandescent bulbs. Retrofitting projectors is the way to go and will produce the best lighting output.
The only issue will be having a clear lens made which will produce a much cleaner, clearer, and better output appearance versus the Fresnel lens the fog lights have now.
Output is bleh with or without HID in stock housings. Problem being that 85% of the reflectors are either hazed and/or are burnt. The glare shields do not reduce output at all. I've tested output with and without them and the only difference is that one glares much more than the other. Common sense tell you which one that is lol
Projectors are certainly the way to go but I haven't come out with clear lenses for the housings just yet. Being that most don't care to put good money into these aging cars, I'm not sure if I will even bother to do them but output isn't too terrible with the projectors behind stock lenses. They are fluted but the flutes are horizontal only to make the beam wider. They do distort the beam some but in an application like fog lights, it isn't entirely necessary to have razor sharp cutoff like headlights for example
Like Quicky said, you'll probably disregard all this anyway and just stick H3C HIDs in stock housings and call it a day. Most do unfortunately but figured I'd put the info out there for those interested in doing it the right way.
Gotta throw my opinion in the ring. I rerto'd halogen projectors into my stock fogs. They put out so much more lights. I absolutely love them. Puts so much more light on the road. Great for city driving!
But it takes work, They are a lot harder to separate than headlights.

Mine were in good shape, but hard to open, had to bake at 400 for 10 minutes to get them to crack
I used 2002 Celica fog projectors I found at the junkyard
Night shot with the J30 retros and celica fogs
Those look really nice thanks for posting. Do you have the ability to adjust the cutoff or aim them at all? These need to be hitting the ground not facing up so that light hit drivers directly in the face.
Don't see any hardware for that.
400 deg wow I never tried to open fogs before but I may try to retro dogs my next project

I thought of that about half way through the project. I used shims on the two bolts to aim them up or down. In the pic, it looks like they are aiming up. Its a camera trick, they are actually aimed quite low. I pulled the fuse on the dims to aim them. They travel about 70-80ft in front then beam goes into the ground.
I suppose one could also shim the fog light brackets to aim them too.
Yea shims are a good idea as all they have to do is be aimed down slightly.
Chris, which projectors do you use for fog retros?
I want to do something that uses a dS2 bulb with 35w 3000k HID ballast I want the yellow look.
In addition, do you know that a clear lens can be made using Acrylic? A custom fog lens can be made for this. Check it out there videos on YouTube on how to make customs lenses made from Acrylic. Seems like a lot involved trial and error but it is possible. That's the route I'll go; no Fresnel lens on my Fog projectors once I get them done.
