how to tell where car was made?

My 1996 has a metal tag on the firewall near the power streering pump. On mine, it says .... Made in Japan. 205k miles on it. Runs like a new car.
Perhaps other years have a metal tag there too, which says where it was made.
Generally the first digit of the Vin number will start with J if ot was made in Japan, and 1 if it was made in the USA.
My son has a 1994 Nissan pickup with 260,000 miles. It was made in USA.
Oftentimes it's the company, not the workers who determine quality control.

The very first link in the HOWTO above is for how to decode the VIN, which can tell you where the car was built right down to the plant that churned it out, among other things.
OTOH it turned out I had to go to that metal tag on the firewall to figure out whether the car was fed spec or cali spec.
