Alternator died? Where to get new one?

If you are checking the voltage yourself, some voltmeters will give false readings if the battery in the meter is getting low. Check that just in case.

The young man at Batteries Plus, whom I queried post-resolution, thought that a plate could break inside the battery and expose one plate to another, (me talking now) thus putting the plates in series (whereas normally they're parallel).

One of the normal failures of a car battery is that the plates warp and touch each other. This creates a short and discharges the battery internally. If you check the battery while this is happening, the voltage will be less than 12, not more.

The Infiniti's electrical system performed "flawlessly" yesterday during a highway trip.
The electrical weirdness that was observed two weeks after warranty replacing the failed AutoZone alternator (namely, high voltage and dash lit up like a Christmas tree) was resolved by warranty replacing the battery (only).
I've re-read these posts and I swear it only _sounds_ like I'm making this stuff up.
Also I'd like to apologize for threadwhoring OP granturissimus's 2011 post with these alternator shenanigans.

When you changed the alternator from the top, I understand you removed the radiator fans and shroud. For doing that, did you remove the hoses from the radiator? I'd like to avoid that, I just know they'll start leaking after that.

i just saw this, sorry
NO you do not have to remove any coolant hoses to change your alternator

I actually have 3 Alternators in my Garage(shop) which were junk yard finds and looked practically brand new! Take them into a local auto parts store for testing and all three passed with flying colors! Rockauto is an Excellent source to get a Hitachi or Denso unit! My advice is to get one junkyard unit for emergency situations, testing, or to use permanently...Good luck! Make sure you don't have a short in your wiring before connecting a perfectly good alternator!
