Stupid question, how to jack up car?

I'm trying to install my y pipe and need to raise my car, I have jack stands, but my jack only goes 15" this is not enough to get under the car, should i get wheel ramps, and then use jack stands with them, what size wheel ramps? How does everyone raise their car when working on it? Thanks.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT use the emergency Jack! I thought it would work too! I didn't listen to anyone when they said not to use it! Then I went to change my O2 Sensor and BAM!!! That hurt a bit, I'll tell you - Thank god that was before my springs, or I'd be Dead!!!!

Yikes!

You all are scaring me!

Pleeeeeeeze! Don't EVER get under a car that is not supported by one of the following:

a) hydraulic lift
b) ramps
c) jackstands

If you plan on doing any kind of work under your car, make the investment in either ramps, or a good floor jack & jackstands.

(a floor-jack & adjustable jackstands are a little more versatile than ramps, in terms of the range of jobs you can do)

-Well worth it. Above all, be safe.

Safety's
(Plus, you look better not-squashed!)

When I jack up the front, I use two boards underneath a hydraulic jack placed at the center of the car to get the car high enough to slide jackstands under it. I've seen two cars fall off jacks themselves, it's not pretty and I have no desire to be under anything that falls. I'd rather spend the money on decent equipment than be dead

Re: Yikes!

careful with that emergency jack my boy was trying to put his 20s on his mustang for just a couple of hours when the jack make a loud clunk and collapsed lucky he didnt have his foot in the way. Look my advice go and get that big heavy duty craftsman jack from sears and it comes with free jackstands. Thats what I got. I thought I couldnt lift it up but is not that heavy it is a 31/4 ton one. It is big. Ypipe make sure you use that liquid wrench with a long extension along with a universal joint. So spray all the nuts prior to removing. It is easy so dont sweat it.

Please help!

hey, thanks for the advice, but I have the craftsman jack and jack stands, the problem is, when I jack at the specified jack points the jack only goes up 15" and this is hardly enough room to get under it, my face is touching the car when i get under with a creeper, kinda scary, i also have ramps, where should I jack the car to lift it up higher for the jacks stands, because at the specified jack points, the car is not high enough, I also have wheel ramps but they are only about a foot tall, can i use both? What should I do? Thanks for the help!

Re: Please help!

Try putting a piece of 2x4 under the jack or something. that should help. if not lower the car on the jackstands reposition the jack and lift it up again. I hope that helps. try to be a bit creative but be safe

I like my jackstand because I can move the car around with it(push and pull it and turn it a little), the advantages with a big toothed jackstand.

is your floorjack one of those little jacks that weights 30lbs or less and has its own carrying case, similar to this?:

in any case i would suggest getting a different floorjack. yeah it sucks to spend more $$ but what are your options? here's a link to a similar floorjack i've owned for over 5 yrs that lifts a little over 19 inches:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=4172

i purchased it for $38 plus change. last week i went to a harbor freight tool and they were selling a 2 1/4 floorjack for $39.95.

best bang for the buck!

it lifts high enough; i can roll around underneath my front end when its up during my routine inspection of the cv joints and stuff.

if money is no object get yourself an OTC-brand floorjack. its american made with quality seals and comes with a lifetime warranty. it also lifts higher (around 22inch) it will cost you a pretty penny though $250-300)!

Man! I didn't know there would be such huge response to this thread! Yeah, I like the jack and jackstands myself. I jack up the car, put jackstands underneath and lower the car onto the jackstands, but I still keep the jack in place and under pressure against the jacking point. I don't trust jackstands or jacks on their own. Also if you're just jacking up the front, put some wood or brick behind the rear wheel to prevent it from rolling off the stands as well as applying the handbrake. If you jack up the back only, you MUST put bricks on the front! The parking brake will NOT help you there!(you could leave it in gear too)
