double thump from driver's side rear

I am "test" driving this 98 i30 everyday post re-assembly of the top end. This didn't use to be my daily, so I'm not used to some of the noises it makes.

When I go over a speed bump with just the passenger's side tires (just the rear suspension is what I'm talking about here) everything seems "normal", with the expected sound of the suspension / the car traveling up and down. FYI the jack is securely stowed on the Passenger Side. Spare tire tight, nothing in the trunk.

When I go over a speed bump with just the DRIVER'S side tires, there is the same initial "normal" noise in the rear, but its followed by an unhealthy-sounding "2nd noise" that sounds and feels like something coming back DOWN, and hitting something else.

There's only one "2nd noise" to speak of (it's not a "rattle"). The charcoal canister and all the other EVAP bs back there is bolted down tight. There are no other noises or complaints re: the rear suspension to speak of.

All four corners were replaced with Monroe Quick Struts only 10k miles ago.

So...some kind of feature of the rear end design? Or instead, something rotted away? Where should I start looking ?

Thanks - Brian in Houston

Check the trailing arm bushing and the control rod and lateral link bushings to see of they cracked or failed. Not usually!

Or on the strut, check the spring insulators.

If necessary, jack up that corner and place on a Jack Stand and remove the tire. Use a floor jack to get under the axle beam and move it up and down and see if that gets you closer.

Hope this helps!
