Intermittent starting

1998 I30 167,000 miles. I went to start the car to go to work and no cranking. The dash lights lit up but no crank. There is power to everything but no crank. Later the car started and I drove it all day with no problems. That was yesterday. Today, no crank at all. There is power to the dash and everything works. Any solutions?

It could be a number of things, but it sounds like the ignition slop problem. I posted a thread on my experiences with that a while ago: https://maxima.org/forums/4th-genera...ml#post8875419

Thanks. My key does come out with the engine running. I recall seeing a thread with pictures of the tin can fix, but I cannot find it. Is it in the stickies?

If your key comes out while the engine is running you have another issue..it may be on top of a bad ignition switch, but you can only fix the key issue by replacing the cylinder

If it's not the ignition switch on the column causing the no start issue, then it's probably the starter itself

The electrical portion of the igniton switch is a common issue. The symptoms are what you are experiencing.

The replacement costs about 30 bucks.

Instructions are in the stickies.

The task is fairly easy.

I have replaced 2 of them in the past 110 k
miles.

The key has slid out of the ignition for a couple of years now. I am going to guess its ignition slop. I will test the ignition switch first and go from there. Thanks to all.

I replaced my Advance Auto starter a few weeks back after I had issues of periodic no-crank, often in warmer weather, on key turn (it would start usually after a few tries of the key). The starter was also cranking slower compared to when new. I had though it was the ignition switch and shimmed it but still had the occasional no start issue. I replaced it with a $35-$40 eBay "US Stock" starter and it solved my issue. Will have to see how long this cheap starter lasts though. My Advanced Auto (gold series?) lasted between 1-2 years of low mileage driving.

It turned out to be ignition switch slop. I shimmed the switch with a coke can and it is working well so far.
