Mode selector doesn't work on my climate control.

'99 Maxima GLE. The icons light up when I tap the mode selector (feet, defrost, dash, etc) but air only blows through the dash vents, not the foot vents, defroster or any combination. In addition, the dedicated defroster selector doesn't work either. However, everything else works (air recirculation, ambient temp, temp adjustment and fan adjustment). Sucks not having a defroster in the dead of winter! Is the blend door in the heater box electrically activated or vacuum activated? Don't really want to pull the entire heater box! I can get a used, working climate control module for $80 but hate to spend the money only to find out that's not the problem.
BTW, the digital clock works sporadically also. Any ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

If you look in the FSM, you can see and follow as prescribed set of button presses that will put the heater control panel into diagnostic mode. It will tell you the exact problem.

You're looking for the HA section of the FSM. http://boredmder.com/FSMs/Nissan/Maxima/1998/

Same situation a few years back! Bought a Mode Door Motor from an online Nissan dealer. Fixed! PITA getting under the driver's side and swapping it out though. Be prepared!

Thanks for all the replies! Ran the diagnostic and it looks like the mode door motor is the culprit. KP11520......nice little write-up! It shows me exactly where it is and how to R&R. Many thanks on that! I'll probably pull the drivers seat to give myself some more room. I found one online for around $70. I'll order it up next week and see what happens!
