Start here: https://maxima.org/forums/4th-genera...on-maxima.html
Most links are dead by now so you'll need to hope web.archive.org has a copy of it.% speed swap link below.

In a nutshell:
There may be some I'm forgetting but here's the list off the top of my head.
  • 5 Speed
    • PRO
      • Cheaper
      • Lighter Weight (~30 lbs)
      • Easier to install
      • Rod Shift Linkage = Direct Shifter Feeling (shifter feels connected to the car)
    • CON
      • Weaker Transmission
      • VLSD is probably iffy at best since the fluid is nearly 20 years old now.
  • 6 Speed
    • PRO
      • Stronger Transmission
      • Plenty of OEM gearing options
      • Mechanical HLSD
    • CON
      • Heavier
      • More Expensive
      • Cable Shift Linkage = Remote shifter feeling (slightly detached shifter feeling, kind of like a video game shifter but not as extreme)
      • Custom Parts to use with a 3.0
        • Need 6mt timing ring made for 3.0 ECU
        • Need JWT/Fidanza lightweight flywheel to use above timing ring.
        • Need to cut & weld 6mt trans mount or use some adapter mount.
The 5 speed isn't a bad transmission by any means, but all the parts needed for the 6 speed can easily exceed the cost of the 5 speed.
All depends on what you want out of the car and how much you're willing to spend on it.
