1999 Nissan Maxima A32 series 3.0 GV 4DR

While driving at low speed and sometimes higher speed,Engine just stops and ignition lights come on. Have to pull over, return to park start car and continue driving. Most times it starts straight away and works okay and then will just cut out again 200 metres up the road. Mostly happens at low speed or when trying to park. Started playing up after i dropped the steering wheel down to clean and put back up again. Not sure if related. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can you tell me what "MAF' sensor is please? Not sure about terms used. Know my way around electrical systems and older cars. Will try to clean myself. Appreciate your help. Have looked up MAF so will clean and see what happens and report back.

If the recent "dropping" of the steering column for cleaning may be a possible cause, does car have aftermarket wiring done such as an aftermarket alarm. If none, then it is probably unrelated.

It could also be your ignition switch in the steering column, or the wires going to it. A long time ago my car would cut out randomly when I was driving, and it turned out that the screws holding in the ignition switch were loose, allowing it to move around and lose connection.

Just to be sure, also check the battery terminal connections for tightness and corrosion.

Thank you for your help. My car has been surging while stopped at lights etc and now the fault with motor just cutting out was all to do with the MAF sensor so i removed and cleaned the sensor and have had no problem since. Even the surging at lights etc has stopped and the car is running better than when i first got it. Thank you all for your help. Is so appreciated.
