NHTSA recalls on Euro style taillamps

Looks like there is a recall afoot for APC Euro style and all clear taillamps. "Aftermarket tail light lenses. These lenses do not comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 108, 'Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.' The rear and side reflex reflectors are clear and not red in color."

http://fmvss108.tripod.com/recalls.htm

Fortunately, the Maxima ones are not in the Altezza list, but that could change (they don't have red side reflectors). I imagine if you have APC clears and have painted them, they will be in compliance.

Now may be a good time to investigate how reflectors may be added to the Altezzas...

this recall just protects APC and others from liability when selling illegal products.

They can say, "Hey, we recalled 'em, it's not our fault you kept using them."

it just makes it harder for a Maxima owner to fight a ticket if issued for illegal lighting.

There really is no fighting it. If you have illegal lights on your car, it is totlly your responsibility. If they didnt tell you they were illegal when they sold them to you...it's still you fault for not knowing the law and keep your vehicle compliant.

Plus, they are usually "fix it" tickets.

I absolutely agree.

That's why I think people with Altezzas should A) make sure they use the side bulbs (some leave them out or paint over them, even one guy (Sexima) was quoted as "didn't need them"--ha!), and B) add some reflective material to be DOT compliant.
