ticking after UDP install
I've had my udp on for about 2 weeks with no trouble. My car went on a 3 hour trip back today and I started to hear a ticking sound. I popped the hood and its definately coming from the pulley. I had it put on by a local performance shop mostly b/c its an auto and I did not have any of the tools. The belts dont show any premature wear and the pulley itself looks to be running fine. The guy that put it on was very knowlegeable about nissans espically Z's and Maximas. The crankshaft seal was replaced and no oil was seen anywhere around. Are the bearings shot in the pulley itself? My question is what could the ticking be from? I searched for ticking associated with the udp and came up with trans and injection noises. Nothing else has been done to the car since that. Any ideas or suggestions?

the tension seems to be fine. i ended up reusing the stock power steering belt b/c the recommended ones would not fit. for the compressor, i ended up having to use a belt half an inch longer than recommended because they would not fit even with adjustment.

Interesting stuff. I, also re-used the stock power steering belt size as the recommended belts were far too small and the stock belt fit perfectly.
I wonder if the crankshaft seal was installed correctly. I did not replace the seal during my installation (very low mileage so no reason to replace it) and that seems to be the only major difference in our installs. I do not, however, know how that might contribute to a "ticking" sound.
I've gone much further than two weeks and have not had any similar behavior. I wish I could help more.

im not throwing an ses light yet. i figured replacing the seal would just be insurance against anything weird going wrong. i watched the guy replace the seal and put a light coat of oil on it. i started it back up today without any noise. maybe its gone or maybe it will come back, who knows. id rather the noise stay on so i can figure out what it is instead of it showing up every once in a while.

well that did not take long. the ticking is back but its only when the compressor is on. could the seal have come loose and when the a/c is turned on, more stress is added and its causing it to wobble and tick? any ideas?

I had a similar sound after installing the UDP. But it didnt appear until about 5500 miles after the install. I took it to the dealer and they had found that the fuel injector valve went bad. so they are replacing it. I dont think there is any connection but they also re shimmed a valve to specs . normal should have been .15 my max was off at .18
but it may be something else.
but it may be something else.
