is my synchro going bad??

hey

I'm new to stick shifts, my first car that has had one, so i wanted to ask you guys how you felt:

Every now and then when i go to throw my car in third, it feels as it wont go in, only at certain rpms i think... i haven't noticed consitancy yet but, if i pushed hard enuf, it would go into first instead of third.

I had dropped into first a few times, and i'm real glad i wasn't stressing the car, so i don't think i damaged it doing that...

I'm just throwing the stick straight up from neutral to third and it just doesn't slip in... Could this be a damaged synchro? If so, why doesn't it happen all the time?

Who has had this happen?

If you have a 02 six-speed then you probably have the same problem many people have had on their 02's. Do search and you'll find numerous threads on third gear issues with the six-speed.

When I shift fast into 3rd on my 2K2 6speed, sometimes I get the grinding noise, as if I didn't have the clutch fully pushed in. Is that synchros too?

from what my buddy was saying, if the transmission is spinning too fast and the clutch isn't push quick enuf or fully engaged that happens. He said if the car is put into gear normally and perfectly and still grinds, that might be a synchro. I hope that helps.

Just sounds like you have a notchy 3rd gear, it's a ery oomen problem. It seems that 2002's suffer form this a bit more then 2003's..

The grinding noise is comming from the syncro, saying it's a problem or not really depends. A good tranny should never have a grinding gear. An occasional gear grind on a 2002 is normal though.. Once it starts happening all the time you have a real problem(like me).
