Timing Chain Replacement?

Hey Everyone!

Quick question here. Some Nissan mechanic (during a pre-buyers check) told me the timing chain needs to be replaced at 96,000km (60,000miles). I was on the understanding that the chain was good for the life of the engine, or close to? Am I on crack or is he trying to drum up some business. I strongly believe the later.

Oh yeah, 2000 Maxima SE is the model in question.

You are right Unless you are hearing some odd noises from under-hood around the chain-its supposed to last the life of the car

Those dumb people at the stealer don't know anything. They are pulling your leg and your wallet. Normally a timing belt is suppose to be replaced between 60k to 105k miles (my 98 Quest should be replaced at 105k miles according to the owner's manual)depending on car make and model year, and a timing chain should be good for the life of the car. If you are the original owner of the Max then don't worry about it. I doubt that you're going to be owner of your Max past 200k miles.

He's wrong. The timing chain only needs to be replaced if it fails - it's not a part requiring maintenance.
