225 or 235
225 or 235
How many people out there are running on 235/45/r17s as opposed to the stock 225/50/r17s???
I need new summer tires and as you all know there is very little selection in our stock rim size 17x7. On tirerack the 235s recommend an 8" rim to mount on. I really have my eye on BFG RE730s as there isn't a negative review anywhere about them. Should I go for the 235s or is it pushing the limits of dangerous. I also realize there will be a 2.1% speedo/odometer discrepency but thats well within livable limits...
Thanx!

I have the RE730 for my summer tires but that's on another set of 8 in wheels as well (245/40/17). The speedo error isn't a big concern. However, putting 235/45/17 on 7 inch wheels would be a huge concern for me to the point that I wouldn't do it. I know people here have done it and they claim it's fine but I wouldn't do it myself.
Oh, and you're most likely going to have someone respond with the words: Use the search function! So I'll beat them to it and say it myself: Use the search function!

Why not just look @ 235/50/r17 tires? Aren't there those Kumho out there @ tirerack for around 100-110 a tire in this size? I thought this size was okay....

Yeah - you do need to search, there are ALOT of threads on this topic, as I've been watching most of them for months now.
I'm really trying to decide WHICH tires to go with when i wear-down the Blow-tenzas.
There's some pretty compelling arguments on BOTH sides of the table for staying within the recommended WIDTH for the 7" stock rims.
Personally, I have decided to go with a 235/45/17 tire, likely the Sumitomo HTR+, since I am interested in higher all season perf. & lower price than the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S's.
If money was no object, I'd go with the A/S's hands-down.
The key to remember is that running this size is out of spec and will require HIGHER REGARD for TIRE MAINTENANCE (pressure), rotation balancing, and LOADING of the CAR.
Given a higher degree of attention to these safety concerns, you should be able to run this size tire without incident - according to the minority concensus.
It's up to you - but there's the facts in a nutshell -- search if you want more!

They look ugly? How can a tire look ugly? They are all black rubber things that attach to a rim. I guess you mean the size, not the tire? I think the 235s look better because they get rid of some of the gap for those of us not wanting to lower the car.
