FYI: This forum was designed for people with problematic issue/s with their vehicle. They come here in hope of a solution/advice before confronting the dealer/autoshop for repairs. But most of us are just enthusiasts who often visit here to discuss about modding our car. The negative comments do not represent the majority of the owner.
check the big cost components
a simple test drive and having a mechanic check some stuff like someone posted previously will resolve all your fears.
I'm probably one of those people who complain alot about the problems. However, if they all get fixed I would say the car is pretty good car.
You will know if it has a brake judder problem just by trying to slow down from about 50 mph - the car will shake - if so, at a minimum have the rotors cut and the pads replaced.
One or two accelerations from a dead stop will tell you right away if the transmission is slipping. Since you have a 2000 GLE you must have an automatic. I had a hard time noticing my 1st to 2nd slipping, but 2nd to 3rd was obvious. Just listen for the transmission to hesistate channging gear -sometimes you will see/hear the engine rev a little. This is covered under warranty until 60K miles.
If you're a fanatic about a quiet ride then you will be able to notice the wind noise from the rear door windows. Drive at about 60. Stop and tape over the windown trim and drive again - this is like a $5 repair that can be done by you, though at 17K miles Nissan will do it - the noise was driving me nuts, but some people just turn up the radio.
I think one of things you will find on here is that these owners, and to some degree myself, pay a lot more attention to their cars than other owners. They really know when something changes or does not feel right - I suspect you might find less enthusiastic owners of other cars may not complain, but they might not even know if they have a 5 speed or 6 speed either.
Just check some of the systems that could be major expenses in the future and once you're satisfied the car is in good condition be happy with it. And I guess most members on here would tell you to start modding.
good luck
