Does intake really make a differenece?
Does intake really make a differenece?
I was talking to one of my friend who has a turboed subaru 2.5RS running on 8.8 psi. Appearenly he knows more about cars than i do so i decided to ask him about what should do to my max. But when i told him i'm going to get a Frankencar intake, he askes me if i am going to get some kind of chip / ecu upgrade or not. I said no, but what he's trying to say is that even though a new intake might flow more air into the engine, but the MAF and ECU might not recongize and take account for the extra air coming into the engine. Therefore the effect of the intake is not very good. Is that true? Accourding to Jetchips, they do make ECU for 2000 - on max. If it is, i think i'm going to run frankencar intake with apxi filter, jet ecu upgrade (i sent in my ECU and they reprogram stuff for me according to my mods). cattman y-pipe whenever they come out with y-pipe for 03 and run a greddy half cat.
any thoughts? thx a bunch!

damn, he has a turbo and he isn't that knowledgable.. that is a scary combination.. let me guess, he paid someone to install the turbo for him, too, right?
just because there is no ecu upgrade, doesn't mean the MAF won't sense additional air.. that is the WHOLE POINT OF HAVING A MAF..
plus if you didn't have a MAF, all you'd need to do is reset the ECU (good to do even with a MAF though), then within a few minutes, the ECU will see the normal idle air intake temp and capactiy, and will adjust accordingly.. that's what an ECU does..
anyways, it will help - noticable help.. you will feel it pull harder and it will sound a lot meaner when you get on it.. you'll love it and that mustang GT sitting next to you at the red light might think twice before dropping his clutch on your when it turns green..

screw the ecu upgrade.
get an intake and a y pipe, you will be happy.
u can't feel any gain when you put in a free flow cat-back onto your NA vehicle. It just sounds faster. keep the stock exhaust.

Granted I am kinda new to the Nissan world--
From what I have always been told from tech's, friends with published vehicles, and what I have read---
OBDII cars mostly do not allow for the chip swaps, you simply reprogram them. They do make full aftermarket computers for them, but there is no chip changing. Anyone know something different here?
Also, with OBDII, the ONLY way to fully reset the ECU is with an OBDII scanner. Disconnecting the battery only clears the short term memory, which in most cases will eliminate a SES light until another fault is found by the ECU. The error code, however, will remain in the ECU indefinitely until cleard by a OBDII scanner. Thus, if you are trying to sneak warranty work, the dealer can retrieve codes even though you think they aren't there, so just beware.
Where is our Nissan Service guy? I'm sure he knows the deal on this one for sure!
