Idling Question

When you start your car and it is warmed up at what rpm are you Idling at? Mine is at 500rpms, is that normal, I've heard it should be like 700/800 rpm.

No. 500 rpm is too low. Go to your dealer and have them bring it up to spec.

why would low rpms be bad???

I was always taught to believe that you WANT low rpms, shows that the car is running smoothly.

I think the specs are 650-750 for manual tranny, when engine is at normal operating temps, and autos I think were in the same ball park but i don't remember if it was 50 lower or higher??

500 is to low... Your timing will be off spec, and you are borderline luging the engine, bad for your rings... You may also find your engine studders when accelerating from a stop???

The fact that your engine idle is out-of-spec may also be a symptom of a bigger problem. If it was my Maxima, I'd get it into the dealer right way.

Consider yourself warned.

Per the ESM:

Once the engine is warmed up and the car is idling, the tach should read the following:

Manual Transmission - 625 RPM +/-50 RPM
Automatic Transmission - 675 RPM +/-50 RPM

If it's not, which your's isn't, get it to the dealer soon. It could be signs of a bigger problem.
