Buzzing Noise From Engine Compartment

I've been hearing a whining/buzzing noise from my engine compartment lately. It usually happens right when I turn the key to "on". It goes for a few seconds then stops. Then when I start the engine it keeps making the noise once in a while and gradually stops. It also happens after I shut off the engine. Does anyone know what it could be?

Guys, I am a newbie on this board but it sounds like it may be a fuel pump. I don't know where the fuel pump is on the maxima but the sumptoms sound similar to a fuel pump going.
