I should hopefully get my car back from the dealer today. They're doing TSBs and a warranty repair on my shift linkage.
I'll take a stab at it this weekend.

If you were to ask the dealer what gear oil to upgrade to, would they even have a option?

My 'opinion' is that you cant go wrong with a good Dino oil in a gearbox.
Perhaps Bill will step in and sumbit any GL data he has.

Nissan has a TSB for an updated gear lube for 6-speed issues- It appears to be GL-4 75/85 dino. If someone wants to post it, just PM me your fax #.

I did the AimSoil. It is still pretty notchy. I don't think anything will make this car shift like a German car.

A Honda 6-speed gearbox...

I just learned about this one too. Apparently it is a "Nissan" brand lubricant (I wonder who actually manufactures it). At any rate, back when I had my clutch disc replaced (for the clutch howl TSB) and they refilled my tranny with the wrong fluid, I went crazy trying to find the correct GL-4 lube and then decided on Amsoil instead. Had the Nissan parts department known about the correct gear oil at the time, I would have used it, but they knew nothing.

The TSB you are referring to lists the particular part number for the gear oil. I believe the part number can be referenced here (admittedly it is not the entire TSB):

I don't think anyone said it was a different grade.

DAVEB needs to verify the OEM grade for sure but I think the message means:

"You lame **** Nissan techs better put the right freakin GL in the 6 speed and not some substandard crap you have on the shelf!"

Exactly! This is what happened to me. It is interesting to note that, I believe, the owners manual for the 2K2 6SPD calls for a 75-90 gear oil.

So basically they switch to a lighter weight to improve shift feel. My question is how much will this affect the longevity of the transmission, especially in the warmer climates?

I know your stance on synthetic gear lubes, but as I said before, the life of your transmissions are also directly affected by the your driving style. Those can't be easy shifts to get those kind of trap speeds. I would be more interested in feedback about transmission/synchro life from people who drive normally. That would be more of an apples to apples comparison.

If that's the case, so be it. I don't pressure people into using the products and I try to provide all the information I can so they can make a more informed decision on which route they want to go. I'm even nice to people who insist on using Redline

Seriously though, I get way more positive feedback from people than I hear complaints. Considering most people are likely to take the time to complain than to give positive feedback, that says something to me.

might being the operative word here... I do agree that this is the first I personally hear negative feedback re: sythetics for the MTs. OTOH, there was some guy claiming his clutch pedal felt smoother after adding Redline. So much for feedback...

I also did notice that even the 2k1 5 speeds are included in the TSB, but not the 2ks. I wonder why???
