The ECU in your car "learns" your driving habits, and adjusts itself accordingly. During break-in, for example, you drive relatively slowly - the ECU gets used to driving most efficiently at low throttle positions, slow speeds, etc.

Long story short, when the ECU is reset you can start from a clean slate and have it adapt itself to more aggressive driving. Note that this isn't necessary, as it will eventually learn this behavior and adapt over time, it'll just take longer.

Also, if you install some mods (Y-pipe, CAI), I've heard it's a good idea to reset the ECU so it learns its new restrictions (or lack thereof).

Okay, here's how you do it:

Stand in front of your car with the hood open
Kneel down and bow to the engine, while chanting "gimme more, baby; gimme more, baby"
Then install an NO2 bottle and kit

Simple, and you'll notice the difference immediately.

Okay, I'm bored. Anyway, the theory on the .org had always been that 5th gen ECU's weren't resettable by disconnecting the battery overnight (other cars can do this). Then yesterday I saw a post about doing that, so... dunno.

But the dealer can do it with their ECU system, which they would probably do for something like $35. And you could have them advance your timing while you're at it

Well - the service manager said they were going to do two degrees (17), the tech and the receipt said they did one (16). So don't actually know - but more has to be better, right?

According to some other posts, up to 17 is still okay for warranty, but you might ask your dealer for confirmation.

JodyBerry: The reset procedure resets all of the "learned" settings of the ECU. It does not revert your advanced timing settings, etc that were done using a Consult-II. When you drive the car after the ECU reset, it will be in learning mode. I have found out that the learning mode is more than 100 miles but less than 200 miles from the reset.

I have a stupid question. If I reset my ECU will this change auto transmission shift points? My tranny is way to sensitive and I'd love it if it didn't downshift when I just barely increase throttle.

That's a little more complex to solve than just resetting the computer. The tranny has it's own little computer (IIRC) that is networked to the primary ECU, and they "talk" to each other...

might take you a few times, the "timing" part has to be precise...

Won't all that pressing on the gas pedal flood the engine or something?
