Installation of a free-air sub

So a friend of mine just gave me an Infinity Reference 10" free air sub and an Orion HCCA-225 amp (to add to my non-Bose factory stereo).

The sub was made to use the entire trunk as an enclosure and I have already verified it doesn't sound great when mounted in a box.

My question is... has anyone managed to successfully install a free air sub in their Maxima?

My main concerns are vibration on the rear deck (maybe solved with a thin layer of carpet padding under the fiber board?) and getting a good seal at the seats.

I am thinking about a way to cover the plastic ring around the rear seat pass-through opening with plexiglass+weather stripping.

I'm on a real tight budget right now, so "Buy a real sub made for a box" isn't an option at the moment.

Thanks!

-Jacob

I used a kicker freeair 8" sub in the stock location for a while. It sounded pretty good actually. I didn't need to do anything in terms of sealing or rattles. In fact, I found that when I put the kicker sub in place of the stock bose sub and tightened it down, that I had virtually no rattles compared to when the bose sub was there.

Hmm... cool thanks! I guess I will just mount it up somehow (not sure how I'm gonna get the 10" in there... might have to break out the angle-grinder...

Thanks man!

I dont know... if you wanted to put a sealed 8 and have it clear the trunk tensioners and trunk passthru wall, it would be about this big

the hand is for scale

the box is 15x9x5.5 w/ .5 mdf which yields about 2.8-ish sq ft.

You have about 9.5 inches of clearance between the rods and passthru thing.. I can get you exact dimensions as I'll be under there all weekend. :/ anyway, I'll do a write up when finished. It mounts to factory bose hole.. it bolts up just like the bose plate did (well from the bottom instead of the top).

hey Jacob

I had a 10" kicker freeair mounted in the space that the bose was supposed to go. I mounted it to a piece of MDF for support (with a hole in the middle of the MDF) I didn't have any rattles with my setup.....I decided that the kicker (even though the manufacture says it could be freeair -- it didn't sound so great so I finally broke down and gave up truck space for a small box)

good luck with whatever you decide
