How does a 3.5 Auto hold up to a 3.2TL Type-S?

There are a HUGE number of posts on this subject if you're really interested. The short answer is that the better driver will win.

The longer answer is the 3.5's have a slight advantage off the line because of greater torque; the 3.2 TL-S' theoretically have a slight advantage at top end (I've never raced one to that speed so don't personally know). But again, the advantages are relatively small in both cases.

Not the Type-S. The 3.2's are kinda quick, but the Type S is just as fast as an auto 2k2 Max. It comes down to driving after that.

Car & Driver seems to agree with me...or was it Road & Track?? either way..they did the test, Acura 3.2tl type S and the 2k2 or 2k3 Maxima SE...

SE killed it....Maxima has more torque and the HP #'s are almost equal...Acura might handle better out the box tho

Screw that... I'll smoke a 3.2TL type S any day of the week. I've driven my friend's type S and I definitely feel the 'butt factor' difference in my Max.

DAMN who said I was going after that. I'd rather go after go after a 911 turbo with no engine.

Now THAT is unrefutable scientific data. Maybe if you have mods and he doesn't, your butt factor may be right, but if it's stock vs. stock and they are both auto, you're imagining things.

No one has ANY love for the Type-S? If they came in 6sp, I would buy one ...

the tls will lose from 0-60 and win from 50-110 and gets its ***** busted from 110+. I know first hand and Im basing my info auto vs auto. Before some of you n00bs try to call my car slow check out the timeslips and see who has the quickest 02-03 auto

I was driving down I-95 yesterday evening heading for DC and got into it a little bit with a 3.2 TL. I'll tell you - that guy was flying. Ultimately I didn't want to keep up because I didn't want to subject my passenger to speeds over 100 but when I did catch up to him in traffic and then found some space, he was giving me a run.

Where do you live? I was on I-95 south the other night. I had a Camry try and keep up with me. Stupid people

I live in Philly (Land of Luckless Sports Teams) but came down toe DC last night to start the weekend early. I guess I left at the right time - didn't hit any traffic and the roads are perfect for "spirited" driving.

but I have to mention - the girlys down here are unbelievable Ok...I'll stop talking now - vicious hangover...

You were lucky to miss traffic. Nothing like being stuck in traffic when your car is dying to haul @ss. I do love going out late at night for the "spirited" driving.

I was checking out the TL also. I've owned two Hondas and both were fantastic cars. I found a 2002 TL Type-S w/19,000 miles on an Acura used lot and they wanted close to $29,000 for it. Holy $hit I thought! Then I found a beautiful sterling silver 2003 Maxima GLE with black leather and only 8,500 miles priced at $23,900 (spoiler and tint included!) Guess which one I bought. Negotiated down closer to 23,000. The Max seems more like a guy car.

Remember though - this is only true when it's the same driver in both. Bad launch (even sorta bad launch) in the Max and the TL-S wins 0-60. TL-S messes up the shift (auto-shift) 50-110 and the Max wins. It's that close.

The one TL-S race I've had, we both had a good launch and I slowly pulled him all the way to 70 mph, when I shut down.
