adding a subwoofer to the bose system

i tried searching and nothing really came up. one of my good friends has a 2001 maxima with the bose radio in it. he is wanting to add an amp and sub to it. it seems like everyone is telling him that he has to replace all of his speakers and run new wires to the new speakers and this is going to be very costly if he has someone else do it. also if i understand correctly the speakers only have one wire running to them and this is why they would need to be replaced? anyway, he wants to put in an aftermarket head unit and subwoofer. a guy at crutchfield.com told him that they have an adapter that would allow this, without having to replace any of the speakers. i guess i just want to try to get everything straight from someone who has had experience with this before. i'm just a friend trying to help another friend out. i'll probly be the one to install everything for him so i want to understand what i'm getting myself into. thanks for the help guys.

Sorry, I didn't read your entire post but my friend has done this years back on his 92 SE w/ blose.
Basically, you need to go to radioshack to get a converter which will have a L/R speaker wire that you splice into the rear speakers, (doesn't interfere w/ usage) then the converter will also have L/R RCA cables which you run to the amp... then you know how it goes from there.

Get a rockford Rockford Fosgate amp and you can hook up the wires
hi-fi instead of RCA. http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/ROC450S
I had my wires hook up for the rear bose subwoofer.
