Is my auto tranny dying?
Is my auto tranny dying?
so, it's been getting steadily worse for the past two weeks or so.
i start my car, and put it into drive to head to work or whatever, and it's only half-engaged into first until half a block later, then it finally kicks in. at first, it was just a second or two, but it's steadily growing to several seconds.
also, it occasionally slips when i get started again on a green light, or after a stop sign. so far it just seems like first gear, as once i'm on the freeway or moving in traffic it shifts normally, as far as i can tell.
it also doesn't seem to happen at the end of the day, when it's (a assume) more warmed up. but it's not like it's been really cold lately or anything.
i've been trying to let it idle a bit before i take off in the morning, but i know i've been really bad about that in the past.
so, is it time to start saving up for a new one?
my car has a little over 69k on it. i'm driving out of town this weekend, will put about 1800 miles on it. i'm pondering getting the tranny flushed before i leave (i think it's only about 60-70 bucks) - think that would help? or is it a waste of money? the last one was at 52645.
help!

Hmmmm, I'm not an expert by a long shot but.. solenoid out? Sounds like the tranny is not developing enough line pressure to get it to stay in gear(or whatever?) I would maybe pull the stick and see if the fluid looks burnt or brown(vs clearish red color)
I had this problem too, except it was while shifting from 2nd to third or even 3rd to fourth. i found myself gunning it to pass someone on the road and it didnt kick in for another 5-8 seconds when there wasnt enough room to pass anymore. Eventually the tranny blew, luckily the car was still under warranty so it was replaced but it took 2 weeks for the job to be done, and i still dont think it responds the way it should. i had 2 people in the car other than me and i only beat a stock 00 4cyl 5spd accord coupe by a car length with od off.

But then you can always add a flywheel, quaife, urethane mounts and it'll get costly
But it's definitely work it

it seems to also not want to drop in and out of overdrive, especially into overdrive when i let off the gas at highway speeds (where it would usually upshift into overdrive).
thanx, jeff. my dad said the same thing about the solenoid, or that maybe there's a belt adjustment i might need.
i'll let you guyz know what i find out...
